CELPIP basics
What is CELPIP?
CELPIP is a computer-based English test of everyday, workplace and community English. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) accepts it for permanent residence and citizenship, Australia's Department of Home Affairs accepts it for visas, and some professional bodies, colleges and universities accept it too. In CELPIP's 2024 data report, 96% of test takers said they were taking it for an IRCC application.
What does CELPIP stand for?
Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program.
Who owns CELPIP?
Paragon Testing Enterprises in Vancouver runs CELPIP. Paragon describes itself as a Prometric company, and its rubric and materials were developed at the University of British Columbia.
What is CELPIP General and LS?
CELPIP-General tests Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. It's the version for permanent residence, Express Entry, the PGWP, Australian visas and professional licensing. CELPIP-General LS tests only Listening and Speaking, takes about 1 hour 10 minutes and is meant for Canadian citizenship. LS sessions are only offered in Canada and India.
Which CELPIP should I take for PR?
CELPIP-General. IRCC's Express Entry page says you must take the CELPIP-General test; the LS version doesn't cover Reading and Writing, so it can't be used for permanent residence.
Is CELPIP computer-based?
Yes, every part. You listen through headphones, type your Writing answers and record your Speaking answers into a microphone. There's no face-to-face speaking interview, and the whole test is done in one sitting.
Can I take CELPIP at home or online?
No. CELPIP doesn't list any online or at-home sessions; you take it at a test centre. Australia's Home Affairs also says it won't accept fully online tests and names "CELPIP Online" as one of them, so only a test-centre CELPIP General counts there.
Is there a CELPIP Academic test?
No. CELPIP only offers CELPIP-General and CELPIP-General LS. Some Canadian colleges and universities accept CELPIP-General, but check with your school; many international students take IELTS Academic, TOEFL or PTE Academic instead.
Can I take CELPIP outside Canada?
Yes. On 7 November 2026 CELPIP's booking list had sessions in 42 countries, including India, Nigeria, the Philippines, the UAE, the UK, the US and Australia. The full CELPIP-General test is offered in all of them; the LS test only in Canada and India.
CELPIP test format and test day
| Section | What you do | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | 38 questions in 6 parts: problem solving, a daily-life conversation, information, a news item, a discussion and viewpoints | 46–55 minutes |
| Reading | 38 questions in 4 parts: correspondence, applying a diagram, information and viewpoints | 43–56 minutes |
| Writing | Task 1: write an email. Task 2: respond to a survey | 53 minutes (about 27 + 26) |
| Speaking | 8 tasks: giving advice, a personal experience, describing a scene, making predictions, comparing and persuading, a difficult situation, expressing opinions, an unusual situation | About 15 minutes |
How long is the CELPIP test?
CELPIP-General takes under 2 hours 50 minutes in one sitting, with no separate speaking day. CELPIP-General LS takes about 1 hour 10 minutes.
How many questions are in CELPIP Listening?
38, split across six parts: 8 in Problem Solving, 5 in the Daily Life Conversation, 6 in Listening for Information, 5 in the News Item, 8 in the Discussion and 6 in Viewpoints. Each recording plays once. Reading also has 38 questions, in four parts. Both sections can include extra unscored questions that look exactly like the scored ones.
How many speaking tasks are in CELPIP?
Eight. You get 30 seconds to prepare for most tasks (60 seconds for Task 6, and a 60-second choice stage in Task 5), then 60 or 90 seconds to speak. Tasks 1 and 7 give you 90 seconds.
Can I write more than 200 words in CELPIP?
You can, but stay close to the range. Both Writing tasks suggest about 150–200 words, and a counter under each box shows your total. CELPIP says you have a little room either side, but your score may suffer if you go significantly over or under, even with a well-written response. Spare minutes are better spent rereading than adding a fourth paragraph.
Does CELPIP have spell check?
Yes. CELPIP says the Writing test includes an automatic spelling checker, along with a word counter and a personal timer. It can offer you a choice of words, so you still have to pick the right one, and it won't catch a correctly spelled wrong word.
Can you take notes during CELPIP Listening?
Yes. The test centre gives you a pen and notepaper, which you hand back at the end. You can raise your hand for more paper.
Is the CELPIP speaking test noisy?
It can be. Everyone in the room takes the test at the same time, and CELPIP warns that you may hear other test takers speaking or typing. Your headphones help, but it's worth doing a few practice Speaking tasks with background noise so it doesn't throw you on the day.
What happens if I don't finish my CELPIP speaking answer in time?
The recording stops when the timer runs out, and the raters can only judge what was recorded. A sentence cut off at the end usually matters less than a response that never reached its main point, so put your answer and reason first and add detail after. Finishing very early has the opposite problem: less language for the raters to assess.
Does CELPIP have negative marking?
No. CELPIP's data report says no points are taken off for wrong answers in Listening and Reading, so never leave a question blank.
Why did my CELPIP test have an extra Reading or Listening part?
Probably because of unscored questions. CELPIP says the Listening and Reading tests contain unscored items used for test development. They can appear anywhere and look exactly like scored items, so you can't tell which they are, and CELPIP says the time they take doesn't come out of your scored tasks. Answer everything as if it counts.
What should I bring to the CELPIP test?
Only the original, valid, unexpired photo ID you registered with. Photocopies, scans and expired documents are refused, and you can't get a refund or transfer if you're turned away. Arrive 45 minutes early: check-in closes 15 minutes before the start. Everything else goes in a bag or locker, because your ID is the only thing allowed in the test room. If you need the washroom during the test, raise your hand: the clock keeps running, and being away from your workstation for more than 20 minutes ends your test.
Does CELPIP repeat questions?
Don't plan on it. CELPIP doesn't publish anything about reusing questions, and it counts memorizing test answers as cheating. You'll see the same task types every time, which is why practising each of the 20 task types under real timing pays off more than hunting for "repeated" questions.
What should I expect when taking CELPIP for the first time?
One continuous computer test: Listening, then Reading, Writing and Speaking. Each recording plays once, you get paper for notes, and you may hear other people talking during Speaking. An extra Listening or Reading part may appear, and you won't know it's unscored. The best preparation is one full timed test, so nothing about the format is new on the day. PrepEx has a free full-length practice test for this.
How CELPIP is scored
| CELPIP level | Listening correct | Reading correct |
|---|---|---|
| 10–12 | 35–38 | 33–38 |
| 9 | 33–35 | 31–33 |
| 8 | 30–33 | 28–31 |
| 7 | 27–31 | 24–28 |
| 6 | 22–28 | 19–25 |
| 5 | 17–23 | 15–20 |
| 4 | 11–18 | 10–16 |
| 3 | 7–12 | 8–11 |
| M (lowest band) | 0–7 | 0–7 |
How is CELPIP scored?
Each skill gets its own CELPIP level from 0 to 12. Listening and Reading are scored by computer from the number of questions you get right, adjusted for the difficulty of that test form. Writing and Speaking are rated on four dimensions each (Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Readability or Listenability, and Task Fulfillment) and those ratings are turned into a level. Your score report also shows an average, but immigration programs look at each skill separately.
Is CELPIP graded by AI?
Not according to CELPIP. Its published process has trained, certified human raters marking Writing and Speaking: each Speaking performance is rated by three to five raters and each Writing performance by four to six, working independently, with a senior "benchmark" rater brought in if they disagree. Listening and Reading are multiple choice and computer-scored, and CELPIP's published rating process doesn't mention AI marking. Instant AI feedback is a feature of practice tools. On PrepEx, for example, AI gives instant feedback on your practice emails and recordings against the same four dimensions, and labels the result as a practice estimate.
Does accent affect CELPIP speaking score?
Not as such. CELPIP's Listenability rating looks at rhythm, pronunciation and intonation, pauses and self-correction, and grammar. The question is whether you're easy to follow, not whether you sound Canadian. A clear accent with steady pacing is fine; mumbling, long pauses and constant restarts cost marks.
Why do so many people get stuck at 8 in CELPIP Writing and Speaking?
Because 8 is the most common level in both. In CELPIP's 2024 data, 27.3% of test takers got exactly 8 in Writing and 22.5% in Speaking, more than any other level. Each Writing performance is rated by four to six raters and each Speaking performance by three to five, working independently. A former CELPIP rater has also said on CELPIP's official podcast that raters can't see your other scores, don't know what score you're hoping for and aren't encouraged to mark low. Moving to 9 usually takes fuller, better-supported answers rather than fancier vocabulary.
What is 34 out of 38 in CELPIP Reading?
About level 10 or higher. CELPIP's own chart, at the top of this section, puts 33–38 correct in the 10–12 range for Reading and 31–33 at level 9. The chart is approximate because the raw score needed for a level shifts slightly between test forms.
To check your own practice score against every matching range, use the CELPIP Reading score calculator or the Listening score calculator.
What is 34 out of 38 in CELPIP Listening?
Around level 9. Listening needs a little more than Reading for the same level: 33–35 correct sits at level 9 and 35–38 in the 10–12 range. So 34 is a solid 9, and one or two more correct answers usually reach 10.
What is 28 out of 38 in CELPIP Reading?
Around level 7 to 8. On CELPIP's chart, 28 is the top of the level 7 range (24–28) and the bottom of level 8 (28–31). In Listening, 28 is around level 6 to 7.
What is the lowest score on CELPIP?
Level 0. CELPIP reports levels 12 down to 0. Levels 1 and 0 mean there wasn't enough of your performance to assess, and NA means you didn't take that section. On the Listening and Reading charts the lowest raw-score band, 0–7 correct, is labelled M. The highest level is 12.
Is there a passing score for CELPIP?
No. CELPIP has no pass or fail. The organisation that receives your scores sets the minimum: CLB 7 in every skill for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, for example, or CLB 4 in Listening and Speaking for citizenship.
Is the CELPIP average the same as CLB?
No. The average on your score report is just the mean of your four levels. IRCC doesn't use it: each skill has to meet the requirement on its own, and Express Entry points are counted skill by skill. An average of 8 can hide a 7 in Reading, and that 7 is what decides your eligibility. Our CELPIP to CLB calculator keeps the four skills separate.
How do I calculate my CELPIP score?
For Listening and Reading, count correct answers out of 38 and read the level off the chart above. Writing and Speaking can't be calculated by counting; they come from rater judgements on the four dimensions. For practice, PrepEx gives an estimated level for each Writing and Speaking answer, and the calculators linked above handle Listening and Reading.

What is a good CELPIP score?
One that meets your target in every skill. For most Canadian PR routes that means at least 7 (CLB 7) in each skill. For a competitive Express Entry profile, 9 or more in each skill is the usual aim, because CLB 9 brings a big jump in points. CELPIP itself describes level 7 as "adequate", 8 as "good", 9 as "effective" and 10 as "highly effective" proficiency in workplace and community contexts.
What is the average CELPIP score?
In CELPIP's 2024 data report the average CELPIP-General levels were 8.22 in Listening, 7.91 in Writing, 7.76 in Speaking and 7.21 in Reading. So a typical test taker sits around level 7 to 8, and Reading is where scores are lowest.
Is 7 a good CELPIP score?
It's enough for many goals. CELPIP 7 in every skill meets the Federal Skilled Worker minimum and the Canadian Experience Class minimum for TEER 0 and 1 jobs, the PGWP requirement for university graduates and Australia's "Competent English". It won't make an Express Entry profile competitive on its own, though: CLB 7 earns 17 core points per skill for a single applicant, against 31 at CLB 9.
Is CELPIP 9 good for PR?
Yes. CLB 9 in all four skills earns the maximum Federal Skilled Worker language points and, for a single applicant, 31 Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points per skill instead of 23 at CLB 8. Combined with education or foreign work experience, CLB 9 can also raise your skill transferability points.
Is 12 a good CELPIP score?
It's the highest level CELPIP gives. For Canada, anything above 10 adds nothing: Express Entry gives the same points for CLB 10 and above. Australia is the exception. Its "Superior English" needs 12 in Writing and 10 in Listening, Reading and Speaking.
Is CELPIP 10 a good score?
Yes. CLB 10 is the top of the Express Entry language scale, worth 34 CRS points per skill for a single applicant. In 2024 about a third of CELPIP-General test takers reached 10 or more in Listening, and about one in five did in each of the other skills.
What is CLB 7 in CELPIP?
A CELPIP level of 7. For levels 3 to 12, the CELPIP level and the CLB level are the same number, skill by skill. CELPIP 2 covers CLB 1 and 2.
What is CLB 9 in CELPIP?
A CELPIP level of 9. In raw-score terms that's roughly 33–35 out of 38 in Listening and 31–33 in Reading. For Writing and Speaking there's no raw score, only the rated level.
Is CELPIP 7 equivalent to IELTS 7?
No. CELPIP 7 equals CLB 7, which IRCC matches to IELTS General Training 6.0 in each skill. An IELTS 7.0 in Reading, Writing or Speaking is CLB 9, the same as CELPIP 9. IELTS Listening is stricter: you need 8.0 for CLB 9.
What is 8777 IELTS equal to in CELPIP?
CELPIP 9 in each skill. IELTS Listening 8.0 with 7.0 in Reading, Writing and Speaking is exactly IRCC's CLB 9 line, and CLB 9 is CELPIP 9.
CELPIP for Canada PR, citizenship and the PGWP
What CELPIP score do I need for PR?
It depends on the program. For Express Entry, IRCC sets these minimums in all four skills:
- Federal Skilled Worker Program: CLB 7 (CELPIP 7) in each skill.
- Canadian Experience Class: CLB 7 for TEER 0 and 1 jobs, CLB 5 for TEER 2 and 3 jobs.
- Federal Skilled Trades Program: CLB 5 in Speaking and Listening, CLB 4 in Reading and Writing.
Those are entry minimums. Higher levels earn more CRS points, and provincial programs set their own requirements.
How many CRS points do I get for CLB 9?
For a single applicant, 31 points per skill, so 124 for CLB 9 in all four, against 68 at CLB 7 and 136 at CLB 10 or above. With a spouse or partner it's 29 per skill (116). CLB 9 can also unlock extra skill transferability points when combined with your education or foreign work experience.
What CELPIP score do I need for citizenship?
Level 4 or higher in Listening and Speaking, if you're 18 to 54. IRCC accepts either CELPIP-General or CELPIP-General LS. If you already took CELPIP-General for permanent residence and scored 4 or more in both, IRCC lets you send those results again, even if they've expired.
Can I use CELPIP for a PGWP?
Yes. The PGWP accepts the same tests as Express Entry, so CELPIP-General works. University graduates need CLB 7 in all four skills; college graduates need CLB 5. Results must be less than two years old when you apply.
Is CELPIP accepted for a Canadian study permit or by universities?
A study permit itself doesn't require a language test; your school sets the requirement. CELPIP says some universities, colleges and vocational programs accept CELPIP-General, but many ask for an academic test, so check your program's admissions page first.
CELPIP for Australia and other countries
| English level | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Competent | 7 | 7 | 7 | 7 |
| Proficient | 9 | 8 | 10 | 8 |
| Superior | 10 | 10 | 12 | 10 |
Is CELPIP accepted in Australia?
Yes, for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025 at a test centre. Home Affairs accepts CELPIP General for visas, with the minimums in the table above: 7 in each skill for Competent English, and more in Writing than in the other skills for Proficient (10) and Superior (12). How recent your test must be depends on the visa, so check your visa's page.
Which countries accept CELPIP?
Canada and Australia, for immigration and visas. CELPIP isn't a UK Secure English Language Test, and it isn't on New Zealand's list for skilled residence. Outside immigration, acceptance is up to each employer, licensing body or school.
CELPIP results and validity
How long does it take to get CELPIP results?
Usually 2–4 business days after your test date, online in your CELPIP account. CELPIP's results page says 2–4 business days and its country pages say 3–4; weekends and holidays don't count. If more than 5 business days have passed and you haven't heard from CELPIP, it asks you to contact its office.
Does CELPIP release results on weekends?
Don't count on it. CELPIP's timeline is in business days, which exclude weekends and holidays, so a Thursday test usually means results between the following Monday and Wednesday.
How do I check my CELPIP results?
Sign in to your CELPIP account and choose Check Scores. Download the PDF Official Score Report from there; that's what you upload to IRCC. CELPIP no longer posts paper score reports. Organisations confirm your scores through CELPIP's Score and Identity Verification System.
How long is CELPIP valid?
For Canadian immigration, two years. IRCC needs your results to be less than two years old when you create your Express Entry profile and again when you submit your PR application, and the PGWP has the same rule. CELPIP's test-format page also says scores are valid for two years from the score report date. Other organisations, including Australian visas, set their own time limits.
Is CELPIP validity counted from the test date or the result date?
CELPIP counts two years from the date your score report is issued. IRCC says results must be less than two years old when you create your profile and when you apply, and its Federal Skilled Worker page says tests are valid for two years after the date of the test result. The safe plan is to count from your test date and make sure your application goes in well before then.
Is CELPIP valid for 3 years?
Not for Canada. IRCC's limit is two years, and an expired result can get an application refused. One of CELPIP's own pages mentions five years, but the receiving organisation's rule is the one that counts. Citizenship is the exception: old PR-time results with 4 or more in Listening and Speaking can be reused even after they expire.
Why are my CELPIP results delayed?
CELPIP doesn't publish reasons. Most "delays" are weekends or holidays inside the 2–4 business-day window. After 5 business days with no email from CELPIP, contact its office directly.
How hard CELPIP is, and how it compares with IELTS and PTE
| Section | Average level | Level 7 or higher | Level 9 or higher |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | 8.22 | 74.5% | 52.0% |
| Reading | 7.21 | 58.0% | 33.3% |
| Writing | 7.91 | 80.4% | 29.8% |
| Speaking | 7.76 | 72.6% | 32.6% |
Is CELPIP hard?
It's a full four-skill test, so it's as hard as the level you need. Level 7 is within reach for most test takers: in 2024, about three in four reached it in Listening and Speaking. CLB 9 in all four skills is hard: about half of test takers reached 9 or more in Listening that year, but only about a third did in Reading and Speaking, and fewer than a third in Writing.
What is the hardest part of CELPIP?
By CELPIP's own numbers, Reading. It has the lowest average level (7.21) and the smallest share of people at 7 or above. Writing is hard in a different way: most people reach 7, but about half of all test takers landed on exactly 7 or 8, and the fewest reached 9. Reading is mostly a speed problem across four parts on one clock; Writing and Speaking are about fully answering the task, not just writing correct English.
Is it hard to get 9 in CELPIP?
For most people, yes, and it's harder in some skills than others. In 2024, 52% of test takers reached 9 or more in Listening, but only about 30–33% did in Reading, Writing and Speaking. In Listening, 9 means roughly 33–35 out of 38; in Reading, 31–33. There's a step-by-step plan in our guide on how to work toward CLB 9.
Is it hard to get 7 in CELPIP?
Less so. In 2024 roughly three in four test takers reached 7 or more in Listening and Speaking, and four in five did in Writing. Reading was the exception at 58%. In raw terms, 7 is about 27 correct in Listening and 24 in Reading.
Is CELPIP easier than IELTS?
Neither is easier for everyone. CELPIP suits people who like a single computer sitting, Canadian English and everyday situations, and its levels line up one-to-one with CLB, so the target is easy to read. IELTS suits people who would rather speak to a real examiner. Score requirements differ too: CLB 9 needs IELTS Listening 8.0 but only CELPIP Listening 9. For a full comparison, see CELPIP vs IELTS vs TOEFL.
Which is easier, CELPIP or PTE Core?
Both are accepted for Express Entry and both are taken on a computer at a test centre. PTE Core is scored entirely by computer, and some of its tasks count toward more than one skill. CELPIP Writing and Speaking are marked by human raters, and each task counts for one skill. Our CELPIP vs PTE Core guide compares the formats and CLB score lines in detail.
Is writing easier in CELPIP?
Writing is the section where most people reach at least 7 (80% in 2024), so the basics are within reach for most people. Getting past 8 is the hard part: only about 30% scored 9 or above. The two tasks are an email and a survey response, both practical. To get past 8, answer every part of the prompt and back each point with a reason and a detail.
Is the real CELPIP test harder than practice tests?
It depends on the practice test. Test takers report it both ways: some score higher on the real exam than on third-party mocks, others lower, and many say the real Reading felt harder than the official practice tests. No mock can promise your score. Full-length practice under real timing gets you closest to the experience, and on any platform, including PrepEx, the level you see is an estimate, not an official CELPIP result.
How to prepare for CELPIP
How long should I study for CELPIP?
It depends on the gap between where you are and where you need to be. If your English is already close to your target, plan at least two to four weeks to learn every task type and its timing. If you need to move up one or two levels in a skill, plan on a few months of regular practice. Take one full practice test first, then plan around your weakest skill. The free CELPIP study plan generator builds a dated schedule from your test date.
Can I prepare for CELPIP in 3 days?
You can learn the format in three days, but not move up a level. Use them to do one full timed practice test, learn the timing of each Speaking task, and write one email and one survey response under the clock. That's enough to stop the format from costing you points if your English is already at your target.
Can I prepare for CELPIP in 1 week?
Yes, if you're close to your target. A week gives you time to practise all 20 task types, take two full timed tests and fix your most common mistakes. Our 7-day CELPIP plan lays out each day, with a lighter last day before the test.
How to pass CELPIP easily?
There's no pass mark, so the goal is your target level in every skill. What helps most: know every task's timing before test day, never leave a Listening or Reading question blank, answer every part of each Writing and Speaking prompt, and use the full speaking time without rushing to finish early. Practise each task with feedback rather than only reading tips.
How to get 9 each in CELPIP?
Treat the four skills separately. For Reading and Listening, aim for about 31–35 correct out of 38, which means checking why each wrong answer was wrong, not just how many. For Writing and Speaking, raters look for a complete, well-organised answer with specific details and precise vocabulary, so practise adding a reason and an example to every point. Our CLB 9 guide breaks this down by skill.
How do I get from 8 to 9 in CELPIP Writing?
Answer every point in the prompt, give each one a reason and a specific detail, and match the tone to the reader: polite and direct for a manager, warmer for a neighbour. Use sentence structures you control rather than long ones you don't, and keep three or four minutes to reread for missing information. PrepEx rates each practice email and survey response on Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Readability and Task Fulfillment separately, so you can see which one keeps you at 8. Our annotated Writing samples show the difference.
How much do grammar and spelling matter in CELPIP Writing?
They matter, but raters don't count mistakes. A former CELPIP rater explained on CELPIP's official podcast that there's no set number of errors you're allowed, and that raters look at the response as a whole. Grammar, spelling and punctuation sit under Readability, one of four Writing dimensions, alongside Content/Coherence, Vocabulary and Task Fulfillment. Use simple language you control rather than showy words you don't.
How formal should a CELPIP email be?
Match the reader. Use a polite, direct tone for a manager or company and a warmer one for a friend or neighbour, because tone is part of Task Fulfillment. Say why you're writing in the first sentence or two, give each bullet in the prompt its own paragraph, and close with what you'd like to happen next. Try it on our free Writing Task 1 practice.
How do I improve my CELPIP speaking from 8 to 9?
Use the full time with a simple shape: answer, reason, example, short wrap-up. In picture tasks, name specific details instead of general ones. In Task 5, make a clear choice and give reasons that suit the person you're persuading. Cut down on fillers and restarts, because Listenability counts pauses and self-correction. How do I improve CELPIP Reading?
Reading has the lowest average of the four sections, and most lost points come from time. Practise each part under its own clock, never leave a question blank (there's no negative marking), and after each set check the exact line in the text that proves the right answer. Many test takers run short of time in Parts 3 and 4, and Part 4, Viewpoints, depends on following the writer's position rather than finding a single fact.
How do I improve CELPIP Listening?
Each recording plays once, so practise taking short notes by speaker: who wants what, and why. Parts 5 and 6, the discussion and the viewpoints, are longer recordings and take the most stamina. Skim the answer choices as soon as they appear, and practise with full-length audio rather than single clips.
Should I use templates for CELPIP?
Use a structure, not a script. An opening that states your purpose, one paragraph per point and a clear close will help. Memorised sentences won't: a former CELPIP rater advised on CELPIP's official podcast against bringing a memorised template into the test, because raters recognise general sentences that could fit any prompt. Build each answer from the details in the actual task. Our CELPIP Speaking and Writing templates show structures to adapt.
Where can I practise CELPIP for free?
CELPIP offers free official sample tests on its website. PrepEx gives you two graded CELPIP practice sessions a day across all four skills with no card required, and a free full-length CELPIP-General practice test after three practice sessions in at least two sections. There's also a free 37-lesson CELPIP course, Writing samples and Speaking samples with audio.
What is the best CELPIP practice test?
One that matches the real test: full length, real timing, all 20 task types, and Writing and Speaking feedback on CELPIP's four performance dimensions. Start with CELPIP's free official sample tests to see the format. PrepEx adds full-length timed tests, instant feedback and Listening and Reading answer explanations, and labels every level as a practice estimate. For a side-by-side look at the main options, see Best CELPIP prep 2026.
Is a paid CELPIP mock test worth it?
It can be, once you've used the free official samples and know your weak skill. A paid test earns its cost if it's full length, runs on real timing, explains every Listening and Reading answer and gives specific feedback on Writing and Speaking. Use mocks for practice and pacing rather than as a prediction of your score. PrepEx Pro includes 30 full-length tests, and our guide to CELPIP practice tests and AI feedback has a checklist for comparing options.
Can ChatGPT grade my CELPIP writing?
It can point out grammar and spelling slips, but it doesn't know CELPIP's rating scale, and a level from a general chatbot isn't anchored to how CELPIP raters score. Test takers report it marking both harsher and more generously than the real exam. Use a tool built around the CELPIP criteria instead. PrepEx checks your email or survey response against Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Readability and Task Fulfillment and shows which one to work on, with the level clearly labelled as a practice estimate.
Is there CELPIP practice with AI feedback?
Yes. PrepEx checks your practice emails, survey responses and Speaking recordings against CELPIP's four performance dimensions and tells you what to fix right after you submit. Listening and Reading are marked against the answer key with explanations. PrepEx Pro adds 30 full-length practice tests written by language educators, a new test every week and unlimited graded sessions. All PrepEx levels are practice estimates, not official CELPIP scores.
Do I need a CELPIP tutor or course?
You don't need one to reach your target, and many people prepare on their own. A tutor helps most when you've practised and can't see why you're stuck, because they can point at specific sentences or habits. Before paying, try the free 37-lesson CELPIP course and a few graded practice sessions on PrepEx, which show which rating dimension is holding you back.
Do native English speakers need to prepare for CELPIP?
Yes, at least for the format. In CELPIP's 2024 data, test takers whose first language is English averaged 8.84 in Listening, 8.88 in Writing, 9.33 in Speaking and only 7.79 in Reading. Being a native speaker doesn't guarantee CLB 9 or 10, and Reading under time pressure catches many people out. One full practice test shows you where you stand.
My CELPIP test is tomorrow. What should I do?
Don't cram. Check that the ID you registered with is original, valid and in your bag, plan to arrive 45 minutes early, and review the timing of the eight Speaking tasks once. On the day: answer every Listening and Reading question, use the full speaking time, and keep a few minutes at the end of each Writing task to reread. Our final-week plan has a lighter last day for this reason.
I keep getting the same CELPIP score. What should I change?
Change how you practise, not how often you test. Find which skill and which rating dimension is holding you back, practise that task type with feedback until the problem stops showing up, then do one full timed test before you book again. If a single Writing or Speaking score is one level short and the rest meet your target, consider re-evaluation before a full retake.
Booking, retakes and re-evaluation
How much does CELPIP cost?
It depends on the country and test version, and fees in several countries go up for sessions from January 2027. Our CELPIP exam fee guide lists the current fee in every country with test dates, plus tax, transfer and refund rules. If you're booking in Canada or India, a CELPIP voucher from an authorised provider can lower the cost.
How do I book a CELPIP test?
Create a CELPIP account on celpip.ca, find a test date and pay online. In Canada you can also register in person at Paragon's offices in Vancouver or Toronto. Test centres themselves don't take registrations. Register with the exact ID you'll bring on test day, and check that your name matches it.
Can I reschedule or cancel my CELPIP test?
Yes, with notice. In Canada, cancel at least 7 calendar days before the test for a 50% refund; after that there's no refund. Transfers to another date also need 7 days' notice; the first transfer is free and later ones cost a fee. Most country pages outside Canada use 9 calendar days instead of 7.
How many times can you take CELPIP?
There's no lifetime limit. The only rule is spacing: in Canada you can't register for more than one session within 5 calendar days, and outside Canada sessions must be at least 30 calendar days apart.
Can I retake only one section of CELPIP?
No. CELPIP has no single-skill retake, so retaking means sitting all four sections again, and CELPIP doesn't combine scores from different tests. If you think one Writing or Speaking score is wrong, re-evaluation is the only way to review it. Our CELPIP retake guide helps you decide between the two.
Can I combine CELPIP scores from different tests?
No. CELPIP says it can't combine scores from separate tests into one result, so each score report stands on its own. If your best Reading and best Speaking came from different sittings, you can't merge them.
Should I retake CELPIP for a higher CLB?
Work out the points first. For a single Express Entry applicant, moving one skill from CLB 8 to 9 is worth 8 core CRS points, and from 9 to 10 another 3. If one or two skills are a level short of a cut-off you need, a retake can pay off; if you're already at 9 or 10 everywhere, it rarely does. Our retake guide walks through the decision.
Is CELPIP re-evaluation worth it?
Sometimes, for Writing or Speaking. You can apply within six months of your test, choose which sections to re-evaluate, and get the fee back for any Writing or Speaking section whose level goes up. Results take about one to two weeks. Re-evaluating Listening or Reading is rarely worth it: CELPIP says those computer-scored results are unlikely to change. Each section can be re-evaluated once, and requests can't be cancelled. CELPIP publishes no success rate. Many test takers report going up a level in Writing or Speaking, but the people who share results tend to be the ones whose scores rose, so don't treat those stories as odds.
How long does CELPIP re-evaluation take?
About one to two weeks after you apply and pay the re-evaluation fee, according to CELPIP.
Can I re-evaluate CELPIP Reading or Listening?
You can, but CELPIP says it's unlikely to change those scores, because Listening and Reading are computer-rated. Re-evaluation is mainly worth considering for Writing and Speaking, where human raters assess your work.
Can CELPIP re-evaluation reduce my score?
CELPIP doesn't promise it can't. Its results page talks about a level that "changes", and the fee is refunded only when Speaking or Writing goes up. Many test takers say scores only rise or stay the same, but CELPIP doesn't state that as a rule. Re-evaluation makes most sense when one rated section is a level short and your other scores already meet your target.
