CELPIP vs PTE Core: Choose Your Preparation Route

Compare the tasks you will actually do, then check the test version and destination requirements before booking.

Use the right test version

IRCC lists CELPIP-General and PTE Core among the English tests accepted for Express Entry. That does not make every CELPIP or PTE version interchangeable. CELPIP-General LS assesses two skills; PTE Academic is a different Pearson product.

PrepEx’s current PTE practice product is PTE Academic. Its task pages and mocks should not be treated as PTE Core preparation or evidence of Core readiness. Use Pearson’s Core-specific materials when exploring that route.

The CLB numbers use different score scales

A CELPIP-General level 9 maps to CLB 9 for the same ability. PTE Core uses a different scale with skill-specific thresholds. IRCC’s CLB 9 row lists Speaking 84–88, Listening 82–88, Reading 78–87 and Writing 88–89.

These CLB rows are application reference tables, not a direct prediction that a CELPIP 9 learner will obtain a particular PTE result. An overall score or a generic Pearson-to-IELTS chart cannot replace the required individual skills.

Try the task style before making a choice

Spend one session with each provider’s official familiarization material. Record whether the main difficulty is language, task instructions, typing, listening memory or microphone delivery. A format that initially feels unusual may become manageable with preparation.

Avoid treating one test as universally easier. Your ability profile matters: sustained scenario responses and short integrated tasks can expose different weaknesses. Compare the work needed to close your gaps, not just the most appealing sample.

A practical booking checklist

  • Confirm the exact test version accepted by the receiving organization.
  • Check local dates, travel, identification and current fees directly with the provider.
  • Read the current skill-specific target and result-validity rules.
  • Use the matching official practice material before committing to a preparation product.
