IELTS statistics 2026

IELTS participation, score distributions and reporting times, with the year and population kept beside every number.

Scope. IELTS Academic and General Training are identified separately where the source distinguishes them. Historical participation figures are not 2026 forecasts.

How many people take IELTS?

IELTS reported more than four million tests in 2023. That is a count of tests taken, not necessarily distinct people, and should be cited with its original year.

  1. 4 million+#

More than four million IELTS tests were taken worldwide in 2023, according to the IELTS partners.

  5. 10,950+#

PrepEx calculates that IELTS’s reported 2023 volume averaged more than 10,950 tests per day.

An annual average, not an observed daily schedule or a count of unique candidates.

    PrepEx calculation 4,000,000 ÷ 365 = 10,958.9; rounding this down gives a conservative lower bound of 10,950.

What are typical IELTS scores?

IELTS’s 2024–2025 performance table reports separate Reading means for Academic and General Training. Its older 2023 summary provides a broader score distribution.

IELTS reported that 85% of test takers scored at least band 5.5 in its 2023 summary.

The announcement does not split this headline between Academic and General Training.

Reading the evidence

A score distribution is not a pass rate

A published band distribution tells you where a cohort scored. Whether a candidate met their target depends on the institution, program and section requirements. Academic and General Training cohorts also differ, so comparing their averages cannot show that one test is easier.

How we checked these statistics

We compiled these facts from the organisations that publish or administer the tests, their research reports and corporate disclosures. Each entry links to its source and identifies its data period. The 2026 page date records this edition’s review; it does not turn older data into 2026 observations.

Calculations are labelled and show their inputs. Publisher figures retain qualifiers such as “more than,” “typically” and “approximately.” We do not estimate missing candidate totals from revenue, turn test sittings into unique people, or treat recognition counts as admission guarantees.

Limits. The 2023 participation announcement and 2024–2025 technical tables cover different periods. This page does not claim a 2026 candidate total, universal pass rate, or an individual chance of reaching a target band.

PrepEx provides independent test preparation. This compilation is not an official report from a test provider. For a current application or booking, confirm the rule with the provider or receiving organisation.

Found a changed source or correction? Contact PrepEx and include the statistic’s permanent link. We update the review date when the evidence is rechecked.
