Choose the test that makes your target score most repeatable
You want computer-first practice and fast feedback loops
PTE is useful when you can improve by repeating scored task formats, reviewing patterns and repairing one skill at a time.
Your destination prefers IELTS or you suit interview speaking
IELTS may fit better if your institution requires it, or if you perform best in a live speaking interview with a human examiner.
Compare the target score first
Translate your IELTS band target into a rough PTE target, then test whether your PTE weak skill is repairable before booking.
PTE vs IELTS comparison
| Question | PTE Academic | IELTS Academic |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery | Computer-based test with integrated speaking, writing, reading and listening tasks. | Computer or paper options in many locations, with a separate Speaking interview. |
| Score scale | Overall and communicative skills are reported on a 10-90 scale. | Overall and section scores are reported as bands from 0-9. |
| Speaking style | You speak into a microphone and complete short task formats under strict timing. | You speak with an examiner in a structured interview. |
| Skill integration | Several tasks contribute to more than one skill, so reading aloud, dictation and summaries can affect multiple outcomes. | Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking are reported as separate sections. |
| Preparation feel | Best suited to task loops, attempt review and pattern repair. | Best suited to band-descriptor awareness, response development and interview confidence. |
| Next PrepEx step | Run a PTE diagnostic or use the 7-day PTE plan. | Confirm IELTS acceptance and format with official IELTS sources. |
Which test fits your current weak skill?
PTE rewards repeatable microphone performance
If your issue is fluency, pronunciation or sentence recall, start with PTE Speaking practice and check whether feedback becomes more consistent after three attempts.
PTE writing is highly task-form sensitive
If word count, summary form or essay structure keeps breaking, use PTE Writing practice before judging the whole test.
PTE reading is task-pattern heavy
If fill blanks, paragraph order or option traps are the issue, run PTE Reading practice with one filtered task at a time.
PTE listening often exposes spelling and exact recall
If you lose marks after hearing the idea correctly, use PTE Listening practice and review dictation, summaries and transcript tasks separately.
Use this PTE vs IELTS decision path
- Confirm which tests your school, visa pathway or employer accepts.
- Convert the rough target with the PTE to IELTS score converter.
- Run a short PTE diagnostic across your weakest skill.
- If the same pattern appears three times, open PTE score not improving and repair that pattern before a mock.
- If your test is soon, follow the PTE 7-day plan instead of switching between tests daily.
Do not decide from forum opinions alone. Use one PrepEx PTE diagnostic session to see whether the PTE format makes your weak skill more measurable and repairable.
