PTE word counter and form-gate checker

PTE writing tasks are scored partly on form, and form is about length. This tool counts your words and sentences as you type and tells you whether your response meets the exact gate for Write Essay, Summarize Written Text or Summarize Spoken Text before you worry about content.

PTE length and form rules

TaskLengthForm rule
Write Essay200–300 wordsOutside the range loses form marks and caps the score.
Summarize Written Text5–75 wordsMust be one single sentence; more than one sentence scores zero.
Summarize Spoken Text50–70 wordsKeep to one tight paragraph covering the main points.

Length and form rules from Pearson PTE Academic Speaking & Writing format and Listening format. Checked July 3, 2026.

Why it matters

Fix form before you polish language

On these tasks, form is a gate: a strong argument or a perfect paraphrase cannot rescue a response that is the wrong length or, for Summarize Written Text, more than one sentence. Getting the length right first protects the marks you have already earned on content, grammar and vocabulary.

Aim for the middle of the range, not the edge

Writing exactly 200 or 300 words leaves no margin. Target roughly 240–280 for essays and a clear, single 30–40 word sentence for Summarize Written Text so a small edit never pushes you outside the gate.
