TOEFL 4.0: what an old score of 80 means now

An overall 80 on the old 0–120 scale sits in ETS’s comparison range for band 4.0: 72–85. ETS also suggests 4.0 when institutions replace an old 80-point requirement. Each university decides its own policy.

What this means for your university shortlist

Penn State is the reason to check the actual admission page: its old minimum was 80, but its published requirement for tests after January 21, 2026 is 4.5. A general conversion to 4.0 would give the wrong application target. ASU’s Nursing and specified Engineering programs list 4.0 overall, with 3.5 in every section.

A band covers a range: 5.0 corresponds to 95–106, not exactly 100. TOEFL’s current overall result averages the four section bands and rounds to the nearest half band. Do not add four current section scores or multiply a band by 20 to recreate an old total.

Choose practice after checking the policy

For a 4.5 requirement, compare all four section estimates before choosing practice. If Reading or Listening is weaker, review the evidence behind missed answers. If Speaking or Writing is weaker, complete a short timed task and apply the feedback to a second attempt.

Source, test dates and limits

The comparison and CEFR table come from ETS’s score-scale guidance for institutions, reviewed November 7, 2026. The current scale applies from January 21, 2026. During the two-year transition, ETS reports a comparable 0–120 overall value alongside the current bands; it remains a comparison value.

This tool compares TOEFL scales only. It does not chain TOEFL, DET and IELTS conversions or infer which test a university accepts. The university profiles use separately checked institutional policies.
