TOEFL 5.0: understanding the old 100-point target

ETS places old overall scores from 95 through 106 in the band 5.0 comparison range. A 5.0 is therefore not an exact 100. ETS recommends 5.0 as a general replacement for an old 100-point requirement, but institutions can choose differently.

Band 5.0 is the comparison for old 100

What this means for your university shortlist

MIT lists 5.0 as its current minimum and 5.5 as recommended. Its former minimum and recommendation were 90 and 100 respectively. ASU’s specified higher-requirement Journalism programs ask for 5.0 overall and 3.5 in every section. Check the named program instead of carrying an old target forward automatically.

ASU3.5–5.0 overall, depending on program; 3.5 each section
Purdue4.5 overall; at least 4.0 in every section
Penn State4.5 overall on the current scale
MIT5.0 minimum; 5.5 recommended
Toronto4.5 overall; Writing 4.5 and Speaking 4.0
Waterloo4.5 overall; Writing and Speaking 5.0

Check the complete policy, test date and degree scope on each profile. Reaching an overall minimum alone does not establish eligibility or guarantee admission.

A band covers a range: 5.0 corresponds to 95–106, not exactly 100. TOEFL’s current overall result averages the four section bands and rounds to the nearest half band. Do not add four current section scores or multiply a band by 20 to recreate an old total.

Choose practice after checking the policy

Decide whether you need a minimum or a recommended benchmark. If you are working toward 5.5, review patterns across multiple full and focused practice attempts. Keep section-level weaknesses visible; one strong section can raise an overall estimate without resolving a specific condition.

Source, test dates and limits

The comparison and CEFR table come from ETS’s score-scale guidance for institutions, reviewed November 7, 2026. The current scale applies from January 21, 2026. During the two-year transition, ETS reports a comparable 0–120 overall value alongside the current bands; it remains a comparison value.

This tool compares TOEFL scales only. It does not chain TOEFL, DET and IELTS conversions or infer which test a university accepts. The university profiles use separately checked institutional policies.

Prepare for the requirement you need

Choose a task in the skill that needs attention, complete an attempt, and use the feedback to plan the next one. PrepEx scores are independent practice estimates, not official TOEFL results.
