How accurate is the Duolingo English Test practice score?

Is the Duolingo practice test score accurate?

The official Duolingo English Test practice score is useful for estimating your current level, but it cannot guarantee your certified result. Duolingo says its practice scoring is closely aligned with the certified test. Treat the reported range as an estimate, then examine your repeated performance, unfinished answers and test conditions. If you get one range from Duolingo and a different number from PrepEx, Arno or DETPractice, first identify what each result measures. A shared score scale does not establish that different providers' estimates are interchangeable.

The useful next question is specific: did you miss listening details, leave writing unfinished, or struggle to develop a spoken answer? A number alone cannot tell you which of those to work on.

Official practice score vs real DET score: what is the difference?

Keep these three result types separate when you compare attempts.

Official results use the 10–160 scale in five-point steps. They report Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking, plus Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation and Production. The official practice session currently takes about 45 minutes; Duolingo asks you to allow about an hour for the certified test. Why can your practice score and real DET score differ?

A different result can reflect a different performance, different testing conditions or a different measurement system. You cannot diagnose the cause from the score gap alone. Check the following before deciding that a platform is too strict or too generous.

You answered a different set of questions

The official DET adapts some question difficulty as you respond. Its scoring accounts for item difficulty, so encountering harder questions is not evidence by itself that your final score will fall. Comparing the number of answers you think you got wrong across two attempts can therefore be misleading. Duolingo's scoring explanation.

Review what you actually produced. Perhaps a new writing topic exposed limited vocabulary, or you understood a conversation but omitted its agreed next step in the summary. Those observations are useful even when you cannot reconstruct the score calculation.

Your conditions changed

A paused exercise, a second attempt after reading a model answer and an uninterrupted attempt on a fresh prompt answer different learning questions. The first two can help you improve. The third gives you better evidence of whether you can apply the skill without immediate help.

Record interruptions, extra time, repeated prompts, help, fatigue and audio problems. If several conditions changed, avoid attributing the entire score difference to improved or reduced English ability.

The provider or result type changed

A task percentage, a third-party overall estimate and an official practice range are different measurements. Converting a task percentage directly to 160, or averaging scores from different vendors, does not create a validated DET prediction. PrepEx's own numeric results are practice estimates, not official DET scores.

Does a 120–130 practice range mean you will score 130?

No. A 120–130 estimated range includes scores below 130. Its upper endpoint is not a promised result, its midpoint is not a guaranteed prediction, and its lower endpoint is not a guaranteed minimum.

Suppose your program requires 130. That range alone leaves the decision unresolved. Look at further fresh, comparable attempts, whether you finish your responses, and any separate subscore requirements. Also consider your deadline and whether you have time to address a recurring weakness.

If later comparable ranges are consistently higher, that is more encouraging evidence. It still does not provide an individual probability of admission or a guarantee of a particular certified score. Duolingo describes the practice output as an estimated range; the cited help page does not give a personal confidence level or a promise that your result will remain inside it. Why do DET practice scores differ across platforms?

Practice scores can differ when platforms assess different tasks or use different scoring methods, or when your performance and test conditions change. The gap alone cannot establish which estimate is more accurate.

Interpret results from PrepEx, Arno, DETPractice and Duolingo's official practice test according to their source, task coverage, timing and whether you completed the attempt independently. Apply the same checks to PrepEx as to any other independent provider.

Our recommendation is to start with the test maker's practice test for an official-source baseline, then use independent tools for response review and additional practice. Inspect feedback against your actual answer: does it identify a relevant omission or explain an error you can verify?

A detailed report can be useful without proving that its number predicts your certified score. To judge a provider's accuracy claim, look for a published comparison with verified official outcomes, a clearly described sample, the testing dates and model version, and reported prediction errors. A testimonial, a partner badge or a precise-looking score is insufficient on its own.

How many Duolingo practice tests should you take?

Use enough practice to understand the format and identify what needs work. Take the next mock with a clear purpose, rather than repeating tests until you see a reassuring number.

A 2025 paper by Duolingo researchers analyzed 25,969 first-time test takers using September 2023 data. Those taking one to three practice tests tended to have higher certified scores than groups taking none or more than three. However, the authors explicitly describe an observational study: underlying English proficiency could explain the differences, and they lacked information about other preparation methods. That finding does not prove that three tests are optimal for you, that a fourth test hurts your score, or that a particular practice range predicts a 2026 result. It studied practice frequency and related outcomes, not the accuracy of independent practice platforms.

Our practical approach is to alternate a fresh timed attempt with review and focused work. Return to a mock when you want to check a specific change: completing the writing follow-up, recalling listening details or sustaining a relevant spoken response. How do you know you are ready for the real DET?

A useful readiness review combines your application requirement, recent practice evidence and test-day setup. The checklist below is PrepEx study guidance, not a validated score predictor or an official booking rule.

1. Check the exact requirement. Record the institution, program, overall target, any subscore minimums and deadline from the institution's current published requirements.
2. Compare like with like. Review recent fresh attempts from the same provider under similar conditions. Preserve the whole range and record incomplete tasks.
3. Check independent performance. Can you finish timed tasks without pausing, copying a model response, using notes or asking for help? Separate coached revisions from fresh attempts.
4. Identify an actionable weakness. Name a repeated problem visible in your answers. “Missed the speaker's reason for changing plans” is more useful than “Listening is bad.”
5. Prepare the required setup. Check your computer, cameras, ID, room and software before the day you intend to test.
6. Leave room for uncertainty. Allow for certification and a possible retake when planning around a deadline. If your evidence remains mixed, use the time available to address the specific gaps.

For the real DET, use a desktop or laptop with a front-facing camera, microphone and speakers, a secondary phone camera and a physical accepted ID. Prepare a private, well-lit room with one keyboard and mouse; disconnect secondary monitors. Do not use headphones or earbuds, notes, other devices beyond the required phone camera, outside assistance, dictionaries, translators, extensions or other applications. The following are illustrative scenarios created for this guide, not learner records or platform-validation results.

Scenario 1: 120–130 in official practice; target 130

You repeatedly leave the final writing response incomplete. The useful action is timed writing practice focused on answering the whole prompt. On the next fresh attempt, check completion and relevance before interpreting a changed range. The current range alone does not establish that you will meet 130.

Scenario 2: a higher official range and a lower third-party estimate

Do not average the two. Read the third-party feedback alongside your response. If it identifies a real weakness, work on it; if the comment is unsupported, do not change a correct answer merely to please the grader. Compare later results within each provider.

Scenario 3: a large increase after repeating the same prompt

You may have learned how to improve that answer. To see whether the improvement transfers, try a new prompt with the same task demands and normal timing. Record the revision as a coached or repeated attempt so it is not confused with independent performance.

What should you practise when your score is not improving?

Choose practice from the error you can observe. A full mock is useful for reviewing a complete session; a shorter task lets you concentrate on one recurring difficulty.

• Your answer wanders: use Writing Sample practice. Check that every paragraph develops the prompt.
• Your follow-up repeats the first answer: use Interactive Writing. Identify what the second prompt adds and respond to that demand.
• You miss exact words: use Listen and Type. Compare your transcription with the revealed reference after submission.
• You lose the reason or outcome of a conversation: use Interactive Listening. Review the situation, the speakers' intentions and their agreed next step.
• You struggle to develop a spoken answer: use Interactive Speaking. Check relevance, development and understandable delivery across changing follow-ups.

After reviewing a response, make one concrete revision, then try to apply that improvement on fresh material. Detailed feedback is valuable when it supports this process. It does not make an independent practice estimate an official result.

Is the real Duolingo English Test always harder than practice?

There is no universal harder-or-easier rule established by the sources here. Question difficulty varies adaptively, and how hard a session feels does not directly determine its score. Prepare for the certified test's full process and security requirements. Official test structure.

Can I get a real score outside my practice range?

Do not rule that out. A practice range is an estimate from a particular attempt, not a certified result or a guaranteed interval for a later sitting. Avoid using either endpoint as a promised floor or ceiling.

Does a longer writing or speaking answer automatically score higher?

No. Length alone does not satisfy the published criteria. Duolingo evaluates relevant development and language use; writing also involves coherence, while speaking includes fluency and pronunciation. Add useful detail, not repetition or unrelated memorized text. Official response criteria.

Can I submit my practice result to a university?

A practice estimate is not a certified DET result. Follow your institution's instructions for accepted evidence and official score sharing; a third-party report should not be represented as a Duolingo-issued certificate.
