PrepExTask 2 says at least 250 words. Would a 340-word essay lose marks for the word count alone, even if everything is relevant?

No, 300 isn't a maximum. You need at least 250 words for Task 2, so you can go over. Just watch that a very long answer doesn't eat into your checking time or add irrelevant ideas.
