PrepEx Review: From Skepticism to a 5.5 TOEFL Score

Zeynep expected to stop after the first week. Improvement in her speaking changed her mind. She practised heavily, stayed with PrepEx, and went on to score 5.5 on TOEFL.

Zeynep's story, edited by PrepEx from her feedback. AI assisted with the writing; the experience and score are learner-reported. Study guidance below the story is from the PrepEx team.

I didn't expect to keep using PrepEx after the first week. I wanted to get above 5 on TOEFL in three months, and I honestly didn't think I could do it.

That was how I felt when I tried PrepEx for TOEFL preparation. I had a target, but very little confidence in reaching it. I was willing to try the platform. I wasn't expecting to stay.

I was skeptical about my three-month TOEFL goal

Three months felt like a short time to make the progress I needed. I didn't start using PrepEx already believing it would get me there.

I also didn't intend to continue beyond the first week. At that point, trying PrepEx was a short experiment for me. I needed to notice a difference in my own work before I could see a reason to keep using it.

Then I started seeing improvement, particularly in my speaking. That was what made me reconsider.

My TOEFL speaking started improving, and I changed my mind

Speaking was where the improvement stood out to me. It gave me a reason to question the conclusion I had reached before I had really given the preparation time to work.

I had started by assuming that getting above 5 in three months was probably beyond me. Seeing my speaking improve made that assumption feel less certain. I still had work to do, but I could tell that I was making progress.

By the time I looked back on my first month with PrepEx, I had a different view of continuing. I had gone in expecting to stop after a week. Now I wanted to stick with it because I was noticing improvements.

I stayed with PrepEx and practised heavily

I continued using PrepEx, and I put a lot of practice into my preparation. My practice was heavy. I was spending real effort on this, even though I had begun with doubts.

The early speaking improvement gave me a reason to keep doing that work. I had something in my own experience that challenged the doubt I started with. Continuing no longer felt like giving more time to an idea I didn't believe in.

My final TOEFL score was 5.5

I went on to get a final TOEFL score of 5.5. I had wanted to get above 5, and I did.

Looking back, the first week stands out because I had not intended to keep going with PrepEx. I could have stopped while I was still judging my chances by how doubtful I felt at the beginning.

Instead, I noticed improvement in my speaking, changed my mind, and continued. That is why my PrepEx review is positive: it became part of a preparation routine I took seriously, and I reached a score I had initially doubted I could achieve.

What Zeynep's experience means for your TOEFL preparation

From the PrepEx team: Zeynep's first-month speaking improvement helped her decide to continue. Heavy practice followed, and she went on to report a final TOEFL score of 5.5, above the target she had initially doubted she could reach.

Her experience is useful if you are skeptical about whether TOEFL preparation can make a difference for you. Look for changes in your own work, and give yourself enough practice to evaluate them. One learner's outcome does not establish what everyone will achieve.

What does “above 5” mean on TOEFL 2026?

The current TOEFL iBT uses a 1–6 score scale in half-point increments. On that scale, a reported score above 5 is 5.5 or 6. Check the requirements of your intended institution, including any section minimums. ETS explains the official TOEFL score scale and score requirements.

What can you practice on PrepEx?

PrepEx provides TOEFL 2026 practice across Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. Start with the tasks you need to understand, then use your responses and feedback to decide what to work on next.

For the official exam's task types, use the ETS TOEFL test content guide. Scores generated during PrepEx practice are estimates, separate from the final TOEFL result a learner receives from ETS.

How to evaluate your first month of TOEFL prep

If you have a three-month target, give the first month a clear purpose: establish where you are, practise the current tasks, and look for specific changes in your work.

  1. Keep a starting sample. Complete a timed response before studying a model answer. Save the response so you have something concrete to compare later.
  2. Choose one change to work on. It might be answering the full question, making a spoken response easier to follow, or correcting a recurring sentence error. Choose it from your own feedback.
  3. Check the skill on fresh material. A better answer to a familiar question can reflect memory. An unfamiliar task helps you judge whether the improvement carries over.
  4. Review your direction at the end of the month. Compare the work and the conditions under which you produced it. Use what you find to plan the next month.

Your starting level, available study time and target requirements will affect the plan you need.

PrepEx review: questions skeptical learners ask

Can PrepEx help me get above 5 in three months?

PrepEx offers practice and feedback to support that preparation. Whether three months is realistic depends on your starting point, study time and progress. Zeynep's initial target was above 5, and her reported final score was 5.5. Her result followed heavy practice and is not a guaranteed timeline for other learners.

Why did Zeynep change her mind about PrepEx?

She did not intend to continue after the first week. Noticing improvement, particularly in her speaking, changed her mind. She stayed with PrepEx, practised heavily and later reported a final TOEFL score of 5.5.

Can I try PrepEx before paying?

Yes. Create a free PrepEx account to begin practising. Check the current TOEFL plans and access limits before deciding whether a paid plan fits your needs.

You can start where Zeynep did: with a goal you are unsure about and a willingness to try. Use your first month to find out what changes in your own work. Explore PrepEx TOEFL 2026 preparation.
