Next week we'll talk about new approaches to assessing young learners. Recently, many schools have shifted away from giving traditional letter grades for students' overall achievement in specific subjects. Instead, they assess their mastery of specific social skills and abilities. For instance, students might be assessed on their ability to work well in a small group, or their ability to give a presentation to a large group. What do you think? Is this an effective way to assess students?
Terry
I think it's a better idea to stick to giving traditional letter grades. Grades are very comprehensive, and therefore require students to really master a particular academic subject. For instance, to get a grade of A in chemistry, students need to know a lot about the properties of elements, chemical reactions, and even a bit of math.

I really like the idea of assessing the soft skills of students. Such skills play a major part in their careers when they finish their schooling, so they should focus on them as early as possible. For instance, someone who is able to collaborate with others is more likely to achieve success in a professional field.
