IELTS Exam Fee 2026: How Much Does IELTS Cost in Your Country?

How much IELTS costs in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the US, Brazil, the UAE, Canada, India, South Korea, France, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and 28 more countries, checked on official British Council and IDP pages. Plus the fees for IELTS for UKVI, Life Skills, One Skill Retake and a remark, the cancellation and date change rules, and how to avoid paying twice.

A wooden study desk with a closed leather wallet, a small sage drawstring purse, a green notebook on a cream envelope, a pencil, headphones and a cup of tea in warm daylight.
On this page

There's no single IELTS price. The fee depends on the country and the test type, and Academic and General Training cost the same everywhere we checked. On 7 November 2026, IELTS on computer cost SAR 1,705 in Saudi Arabia, TRY 12,000 in Turkey (TRY 12,210 at IDP), USD 280–340 in the US, BRL 1,360–1,460 in Brazil, AED 1,590 in the UAE, INR 19,000 in India and KRW 347,000 in South Korea. In Canada, IDP quotes CAD 335–361 before tax. In Central Asia it's KZT 110,250 in Kazakhstan and UZS 2,798,000 in Uzbekistan.

Below are the fees in those countries first, then in 24 more, followed by what IELTS for UKVI, Life Skills, One Skill Retake and a remark cost, the rules for changing or cancelling your date, and how to avoid paying the fee twice.

We checked every fee in this guide on official British Council and IDP pages on 7 November 2026. Fees change, sometimes more than once a year, so check the booking page for your test centre before you pay.

How much is the IELTS exam?

It depends on five things:

  • Your country. Each country has its own fee in its own currency. Some include tax and some don't.
  • The test type. Academic and General Training cost the same. IELTS for UKVI usually costs a little more, and IELTS Life Skills costs less.
  • The format. In some countries, IELTS on computer with Writing on Paper costs more than writing on screen: SAR 1,875 instead of SAR 1,705 at IDP Saudi Arabia, AED 1,750 instead of AED 1,590 at IDP in the UAE, and GHS 4,090 instead of GHS 3,720 at IDP Ghana. In India it's the same price.
  • The city. Most countries charge one national price. Brazil, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Canada, the UK and the US don't, and a few Saudi venues, mostly in Dammam and Khobar, list SAR 1,636.
  • The provider. The British Council and IDP charge the same test fee in most countries, but not all. See British Council or IDP below.

The fee you pay when you book is the whole test fee. Extras cost more only if you need them: One Skill Retake, a remark, a late date change, or more copies of your results.

Some venues, mostly in Dammam and Khobar, list SAR 1,636. IELTS for UKVI is SAR 1,815. Life Skills costs SAR 933 with the British Council and SAR 897 with IDP, and IDP charges SAR 1,875 if you choose Writing on Paper.

  • One Skill Retake: SAR 1,075 on the British Council booking page and at IDP. The British Council's One Skill Retake page says SAR 1,099, so check the amount when you book.
  • Remark: SAR 690 with the British Council, refunded if your score goes up.
  • Changing or cancelling: IDP gives 75% back if you cancel 15 or more days before the test and nothing within 14 days.
  • Discount: IDP was offering SAR 150 off with a discount code shown on its test-dates page, valid until 31 December.

IELTS fee in Turkey (IELTS sınav ücreti)

Turkey is one of the few countries where the two providers charge different amounts. IELTS on computer costs TRY 12,000 with the British Council and TRY 12,210 with IDP. IELTS for UKVI is TRY 13,220 or TRY 13,500, and Life Skills TRY 10,000 or TRY 10,710.

  • Remark: at the British Council it costs exactly half your test fee, refunded in full if your band goes up.
  • One Skill Retake: neither provider publishes a price. IDP refunds it in full if you cancel 72 hours or more before the session.
  • Changing or cancelling: both give 75% back if you cancel 15 or more days ahead. Within 5–14 days, a date change costs up to 25% of the fee and cancelling gets nothing.
  • Extra results: IDP charges TRY 500 for each extra Test Report Form, plus delivery.

IELTS fee in the USA

IELTS costs USD 280–340 in the US, depending on location. The test is delivered by independent testing providers managed by IELTS USA. IELTS for UKVI costs USD 305 and Life Skills USD 195. For computer tests, a date change is free 15 or more days ahead and costs up to 25% of the fee within 5–14 days. If you cancel 15 or more days ahead, you get 75% back.

IELTS fee in Brazil (preço do IELTS)

The price depends on the city and the provider. In Rio de Janeiro, IELTS on computer costs BRL 1,360 with the British Council and BRL 1,430 with IDP. IDP charges BRL 1,460 in São Paulo. IELTS for UKVI is BRL 1,500 and Life Skills BRL 1,000 at the British Council. IDP no longer offers paper-based IELTS in Brazil.

IELTS fee in the UAE

IELTS on computer costs AED 1,590 for Academic or General Training with both providers, and IDP charges AED 1,750 for Writing on Paper. IELTS for UKVI is AED 1,680 and Life Skills AED 810. One Skill Retake costs AED 1,000.70 at the British Council and AED 1,000 at IDP. A remark is AED 475 at the British Council for every test type.

IDP gives 75% back if you cancel 15 or more days ahead, nothing within 14 days, and refunds One Skill Retake in full if you cancel 72 hours or more before it. At the British Council, extra copies of your results cost AED 60 each from the sixth copy, plus courier.

IELTS fee in Canada

IDP puts the Canadian fee at CAD 335–361 before tax, the same for Academic and General Training, so the General Training test for immigration costs the same as Academic. Booking pages we checked mostly showed CAD 358–395, depending on the centre and on whether you book with IDP or the British Council. IDP says there's no separate registration or payment processing fee, and that you won't normally find discounts on its tests.

One Skill Retake costs CAD 199–299 before HST and a remark CAD 165–290, depending on the centre. If you're taking General Training for Express Entry, our IELTS to CLB calculator shows which band you need in each skill.

IELTS exam fee in India

The IELTS exam fee in India is INR 19,000 for Academic or General Training. You pay the same whether you take the whole test on computer or choose IELTS Writing on Paper. IDP has been the only IELTS provider in India since July 2021, and full paper-based IELTS has been discontinued. IELTS for UKVI costs INR 19,250, Life Skills INR 18,000 and One Skill Retake INR 12,650.

  • Remark (Enquiry on Results): INR 14,250, refunded in full if your band score changes.
  • Changing your date: free 15 or more days before the test. Within 5–14 days IDP charges up to a quarter of the fee, which its fee table lists as INR 4,750. Within 4 days you can't move it.
  • Cancelling: 15 or more days before the test you get the fee back minus an admin fee of up to 25%. Within 14 days the fee isn't refundable.
  • Sending results: your first five electronic results to universities are free, then INR 350 each.

IELTS fee in South Korea (아이엘츠 응시료)

IELTS on computer costs KRW 347,000 with both the British Council and IDP, and every test has been on computer since 22 March 2026. • Remark: KRW 160,000 at the British Council, however many sections you ask for, refunded if your score goes up.
  • Changing your date: at the British Council, up to five changes are free 15 or more days before the test. Within 5–14 days a change costs 25% of the fee (KRW 86,750).
  • Cancelling: the British Council refunds in full within 7 days of paying, then keeps 25%. Within 7 days of the test there's no refund.

IELTS fee in France (prix IELTS)

IELTS on computer costs EUR 307 in every British Council city in France, including Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux, Lille and Toulouse. IDP's one centre, in Paris, charges the same. IELTS for UKVI costs EUR 329 and Life Skills EUR 214. A remark is EUR 142 (EUR 110 for Life Skills), refunded in full if your band improves. The British Council gives a full refund within a 14-day cooling-off period after you pay, and after that 75% back if you cancel 15 or more days before the test.

IELTS fee in Kazakhstan (стоимость IELTS)

IELTS on computer costs KZT 110,250 for Academic or General Training with both providers. IELTS for UKVI is KZT 121,000 at the British Council and KZT 123,000 at IDP, and Life Skills KZT 100,250 at the British Council, which no longer offers paper-based IELTS. The British Council tests in 13 cities, from Almaty and Astana to Shymkent and Aktau.

Instead of a percentage, the British Council charges a fixed admin fee of KZT 33,000: it keeps that amount if you cancel 15 or more days ahead, and charges it for a date change within 5–14 days of the test. Within 14 days, cancelling gets nothing back. Remark and One Skill Retake fees are in the British Council's public offer and vary by location at IDP, so ask your centre.

IELTS fee in Uzbekistan (IELTS narxi)

IELTS on computer costs UZS 2,798,000 at the British Council and UZS 2,800,000 at Edu Action, IDP's partner. The British Council charges one price in all its cities and takes online payment in pounds sterling when you register. IELTS for UKVI is UZS 3,119,000 and Life Skills UZS 2,759,000 at the British Council. A remark costs UZS 1,343,000, refunded if your score goes up in any section. The British Council gives 75% back if you cancel 15 or more days before the test and nothing within 14 days.

IELTS fee in Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Georgia and Armenia

  • Kyrgyzstan: the British Council runs IELTS through its partner Academia Education Center. The test costs KGS 22,000 in Bishkek and KGS 24,000 in Osh and Karakol. UKVI is KGS 24,000, One Skill Retake KGS 13,500 and a remark KGS 7,500.
  • Georgia: GEL 760 in Tbilisi and Batumi with the British Council, and the same for IELTS Academic Online. UKVI costs GEL 830 and a remark GEL 295.
  • Armenia: AMD 112,100 with the British Council and at IDP's Yerevan centre, AMD 122,000 for UKVI, and AMD 48,500 for a remark.

The British Council in Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia uses its standard rule: 75% back if you cancel 15 or more days ahead, nothing within 14 days, and a 25% fee to move your date within 5–14 days.

IELTS fee in Pakistan

The British Council and IDP charge the same in Pakistan, but the price depends on the city. Under the British Council fee schedule that took effect on 2 July 2026, IELTS on computer costs PKR 76,240 at the Punjab centres, including Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Gujranwala and Sialkot. It costs PKR 75,600 in Islamabad, Karachi, Peshawar, Abbottabad, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Quetta and Mirpur. IELTS for UKVI is PKR 78,820 and Life Skills PKR 53,000.

Computer is the only format for almost everyone. The British Council offers paper only to candidates approved for special consideration on medical grounds.

  • Changing your date: free 15 or more days before the test, PKR 19,000 within 5–14 days, and not possible within 4 days.
  • Cancelling: 75% back if you cancel 15 or more days before the test (the British Council refunds PKR 57,200), and nothing within 14 days.
  • Remark: PKR 39,650 with the British Council and PKR 40,500 with IDP, refunded if your score goes up.
  • One Skill Retake: IDP lists PKR 48,050 in Lahore and Faisalabad and PKR 47,630 in Islamabad, Karachi and Hyderabad.

IELTS fee in Bangladesh

IELTS on computer costs BDT 31,100 for Academic or General Training, the same at every city centre and with both providers. IELTS for UKVI is BDT 34,850. The providers differ on everything else:

  • Life Skills: BDT 26,000 with the British Council, BDT 24,750 with IDP.
  • One Skill Retake: BDT 19,600 or BDT 18,600.
  • Remark: BDT 12,500 or BDT 10,500.

The British Council refunds 75% if you cancel 15 or more days before the test and nothing after that. IDP's own pages contradict each other on cancellation, so ask IDP for the rule that applies to your booking before you pay.

IELTS fee in Nepal

IELTS on computer costs NPR 36,000 for Academic or General Training and NPR 36,400 for IELTS for UKVI, with both providers. Life Skills costs NPR 29,000. The British Council also offers IELTS on computer with Writing on Paper, but not for UKVI. A remark costs NPR 18,000 with the British Council and NPR 19,000 with IDP. Neither provider publishes a One Skill Retake price, and some IDP Nepal pages still show 2025 fees, so ask the centre and check the date on any page you read.

IELTS fee in Australia

IELTS costs AUD 505 for Academic or General Training in Australia, from IDP's 2026 fee table (updated 4 November 2026). Regional centres may charge a little more. IELTS for UKVI is AUD 515, Life Skills AUD 400, One Skill Retake AUD 320 and a remark AUD 240.

Australia and New Zealand have their own change rules for full Academic and General Training bookings: one free change, a full refund if you cancel 14 or more days ahead, 50% back at 7–13 days and nothing within 7 days. Booking also gets you a free online preparation package and a free IELTS masterclass. New Zealand's prices match Australia's: NZD 505 including GST.

IELTS cost in the UK

In the UK, the British Council runs IELTS and each centre sets its own price. In a British Council booking search on 7 November 2026, IELTS on computer for Academic or General Training cost GBP 220–270, including GBP 260 at London Covent Garden. IELTS for UKVI cost GBP 270 at every British Council centre, and Life Skills GBP 185.

One Skill Retake and remark fees vary by centre, and you see them when you log in. To move your date you need at least 14 days' notice and pay up to 25% of the fee. UK bookings also come with a 14-day cooling-off period after you book.

IELTS fee in Malaysia

IDP charges RM 960 for Academic or General Training and RM 1,065 for UKVI. The British Council charges RM 990 and RM 1,097. A remark costs RM 450 with either. Their cancellation rules differ too. IDP charges RM 233 to cancel or move a test with five weeks' notice or more, and keeps the whole fee with less notice. The British Council refunds 75% if you cancel 15 or more days ahead. The British Council also notes that 6% SST applies to test takers who aren't Malaysian.

Is the IELTS fee the same at British Council and IDP?

In most countries, yes. Where both run the test, they usually charge the same fee for Academic and General Training, as in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, South Korea, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, the Philippines, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuwait. On 7 November 2026 we found these differences:

  • Turkey: TRY 12,000 at the British Council and TRY 12,210 at IDP.
  • Brazil: in Rio de Janeiro, BRL 1,360 at the British Council and BRL 1,430 at IDP.
  • Kazakhstan: the same test fee, but IELTS for UKVI is KZT 121,000 at the British Council and KZT 123,000 at IDP.
  • Uzbekistan: UZS 2,798,000 at the British Council and UZS 2,800,000 at IDP's partner.
  • Malaysia: IDP charges less than the British Council for every test type.
  • Peru: British Council centres charge PEN 1,020–1,055 and IDP centres USD 299.
  • Ghana, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh: the same test fee, but different UKVI, Life Skills, One Skill Retake or remark fees.

Their rules differ more often than their prices. Some offices charge a flat date-change fee instead of a percentage, such as KZT 33,000 at the British Council in Kazakhstan and VND 1,100,000 at IDP Vietnam. IDP also runs time-limited discount codes in some countries, shown on its test-dates pages. So if both providers run tests near you, compare the fee and the cancellation rule before you book.

IELTS for UKVI and Life Skills fees

IELTS for UKVI is the version for UK visa applications that ask for it. It usually costs a little more than the standard test: SAR 1,815 against SAR 1,705 in Saudi Arabia, TRY 13,220 against TRY 12,000 at the British Council in Turkey, KRW 389,000 against KRW 347,000 in South Korea, and INR 19,250 against INR 19,000 in India. In the US it's USD 305. Kuwait and mainland China are exceptions, where both cost the same: KWD 110 and CNY 1,990.

IELTS Life Skills costs less than the standard test: SAR 933 at the British Council in Saudi Arabia, KRW 312,000 in South Korea, INR 18,000 in India and GBP 185 in the UK. Only book UKVI or Life Skills if the visa you're applying for asks for it.

The cancellation rules for UKVI and Life Skills are also different. You get 75% back if you cancel more than 14 days before the test, 50% between 14 and 2 days before, 25% within 2 days, and nothing on or after the test day.

IELTS One Skill Retake fee

One Skill Retake lets you retake Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking instead of the whole test. You have to book and take it within 60 days of an IELTS on computer test, and you can retake only one skill for each full test. IELTS doesn't set one price, but in most countries it costs about two-thirds of the full fee: KRW 218,610 in South Korea, SAR 1,075 in Saudi Arabia, INR 12,650 in India, KGS 13,500 in Kyrgyzstan and AUD 320 in Australia.

Before you book, check that the university, employer or visa office you're applying to accepts One Skill Retake results. Our guide to One Skill Retake, a remark or a full resit goes through how to choose.

IELTS remark fee (Enquiry on Results)

A remark, officially an Enquiry on Results, means your test is marked again. You pay a fee, and it comes back to you if your band score changes. British Council pages say it's refunded if your score goes up, and that a remark can leave the score the same but never lowers it. You usually have to apply within six weeks of your test date. Results take from the same day to 21 days.

The fee varies a lot. It's SAR 690 at the British Council in Saudi Arabia, KRW 160,000 in South Korea, EUR 142 in France, INR 14,250 in India and UZS 1,343,000 in Uzbekistan. The British Council in Turkey charges half the test fee. Since it's refunded only when your band changes, a remark is mainly worth it when one skill is close to the next band.

IELTS refund policy: cancellation and date change fees

Most offices now use a 14-day cut-off rather than the old five-week rule. This is the British Council's standard policy for IELTS Academic and General Training:

British Council policy for IELTS Academic and General Training (checked 7 November 2026)
When you askCancelChange the date
15 or more days before the test75% refund (25% admin fee)Free
5–14 days before the testNo refund25% admin fee
Less than 5 days before the testNo refundNot allowed

IDP and IELTS USA use similar rules for computer tests in most countries we checked. The exceptions:

  • South Korea (British Council): up to five free date changes 15 or more days ahead, a full refund within 7 days of paying, and no refund within 7 days of the test.
  • Kazakhstan (British Council): a fixed KZT 33,000 admin fee instead of 25%.
  • UK: date changes need at least 14 days' notice and cost up to 25%. The new date must be within three months, and you can reschedule once.
  • Australia and New Zealand: one free change, a full refund 14 or more days ahead, and 50% at 7–13 days.
  • IELTS for UKVI and Life Skills: refunds of 75%, 50% or 25% depending on how close the test is.
  • IDP Malaysia: five weeks' notice to cancel or move a test for RM 233.

Some older pages, including the IELTS USA paper-test terms and a few IDP FAQ pages, still describe the five-week rule. Go by the cancellation policy page for the provider and country you book with.

If you're ill on the test day, you can apply for a refund for exceptional circumstances. With the British Council, apply before the test or up to two calendar days after it, with evidence such as a medical certificate. If it's approved, you get your fee back minus an admin fee. For IELTS for UKVI you have five working days to send the evidence. In Australia and New Zealand, a medical certificate sent within 14 days can get you a free transfer to a new date.

Is the IELTS fee increasing in 2026?

In several countries it already has. In Japan, both test partners raised IELTS on computer from JPY 27,500 to JPY 29,700, for registrations from 1 September 2026 with the British Council's partner and from 1 November 2026 with IDP's. One Skill Retake went from JPY 18,000 to JPY 19,250. Pakistan's current British Council fee schedule took effect on 2 July 2026, Sri Lanka's on 9 June 2026, and the British Council in mainland China introduced a new fee policy in 2026. IDP Philippines dates its current prices to 15 July 2026, and IDP Australia updated its fee table on 4 November 2026.

That's also why you'll see different numbers online. Older pages, including some on the providers' own sites, still show lower fees. If two pages disagree, trust the one on your booking page.

Why is IELTS so expensive?

IELTS doesn't publish a breakdown of its fee, so nobody outside the test partners can tell you exactly where the money goes. What the fee pays for on your side is a 2 hour 45 minute test at an official test centre and an official result, which you can send to up to five organisations free in most countries we checked. If you book with the British Council, you also get IELTS Ready Premium free from booking until seven days after your test. IDP Australia includes an online preparation package.

The price also looks very different from country to country because each one is set in local currency, and some include tax. Singapore and New Zealand quote prices with GST, IDP Vietnam's include VAT, and IDP Canada quotes before tax.

How to save money on IELTS

  1. Book when your practice scores are near your target. A full resit costs the whole fee again, and that's the most expensive mistake.
  2. Pick your date early and stick to it. Changes are usually free 15 or more days before the test. After that, they cost up to a quarter of the fee, and cancelling usually gets you nothing back.
  3. Retake one skill instead of the whole test if only one skill is short and the organisation you're applying to accepts One Skill Retake. In most countries it costs about two-thirds of the full fee.
  4. Request a remark only when it's close. The fee comes back only if your band changes.
  5. Compare the British Council and IDP where both run tests near you, and look on the test-dates page for official discount codes.
  6. Use the free preparation that comes with your booking, such as IELTS Ready Premium with the British Council, plus free official practice. Our guide to preparing for IELTS at home lists the free official materials.
  7. Choose where your results go when you book. The first five copies are usually free. Later requests or courier delivery can cost extra.

Start with a free diagnostic

The surest way to pay the IELTS fee once is to know your level before you book. The first PrepEx IELTS diagnostic is free. It takes one Listening section, a short Reading extract, a short Writing task and three short Speaking responses, and gives you a practice range for each of the four skills, with feedback, and a starter practice plan. A free account also lets you practise one Writing Task 1 and one Task 2, two Speaking parts, two Reading passages and two Listening parts, with two scored submissions a day across the four skills. The diagnostic gives a practice estimate, not an official result, and PrepEx practice is built for IELTS Academic.

More questions about the IELTS fee

Is the IELTS fee the same for Academic and General Training?

Yes. In every country we checked, Academic and General Training cost the same, and IDP says so directly. What changes the price is IELTS for UKVI, Life Skills, the format in some countries, and the city in a few.

Is there a separate IELTS registration fee?

No. The registration fee is the test fee you pay when you book. The British Council and IDP list one test fee, and IDP Canada states that there's no separate registration or payment processing fee.

How much is the IELTS fee in US dollars?

In the US, IELTS costs USD 280–340 depending on location, and IELTS for UKVI USD 305. IDP centres in Peru also price the test in dollars, at USD 299. Elsewhere you usually pay in local currency, so a dollar figure is only a conversion and moves with the exchange rate. The British Council in Uzbekistan takes online payment in pounds sterling.

Is IELTS Online cheaper?

Not much, if at all. In Hong Kong and Georgia it costs the same as IELTS on computer: HK$2,900 and GEL 760. In Sri Lanka the British Council charges LKR 72,800 for IELTS Academic Online against LKR 77,000 at a centre. IELTS Online is only available for Academic, and IELTS says to take your test at a test centre for visa and immigration purposes.

Can I get a refund if I miss my IELTS test?

Not usually. If you miss the test without telling anyone, you lose the fee. If you were ill or something serious happened, apply for exceptional circumstances with evidence: within two calendar days of the test with the British Council, or within five working days for IELTS for UKVI. If it's approved, you get the fee back minus an admin fee.

Do I have to pay to send my IELTS results to universities?

Not for the first five, in most countries. After that it depends on the country: INR 350 per extra university in India, AED 60 per copy from the sixth in the UAE, and SGD 23 per copy by registered mail in Singapore. Courier delivery usually costs extra. Some offices, such as the British Council in Ghana and Nepal, send up to ten copies free.

Fees checked on 7 November 2026 on official pages: the British Council in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, South Korea and Kazakhstan; IDP India, Pakistan and Canada; the British Council's Pakistan fee schedule, UK test dates and fees and cancellation policy; IDP Australia and New Zealand change rules; and IELTS pages on One Skill Retake, cancellations, refunds and remarks and IELTS Online. Each country's fee page is linked in the tables.
