How Long Is IELTS Valid? Expiry Dates and Rules for Canada, Australia, the UK and Universities

IELTS results are valid for two years from your test date, but each organisation decides what it accepts. Australia allows three years for its visas. The rules for Canada, the UK, New Zealand, regulators and universities, and what to do if yours has expired.

IELTS results are valid for two years from your test date. That's the limit the IELTS partners recommend, and it's what most universities, immigration offices and regulators use. Your Test Report Form doesn't carry an expiry date, though. Each organisation decides how old a result it accepts, and a few accept older ones or count from a different date.

Australia is the main exception: for its skilled visas, a test from the three years before you apply can count. Canada, UK visas, New Zealand and the UK medical and nursing regulators all use two years.

We checked every rule below on the official site on 29 October 2026. Rules change, so check the page for your own course, visa or registration before you rely on a date.

Is IELTS valid for 2 or 3 years?

Two, for most purposes. The IELTS partners recommend that a result shows someone's English for a maximum of two years. The British Council and IDP both tell test takers their result is valid for two years, and IDP counts it from the test date.

The three-year figure comes from three different places:

  • Australian visas. Home Affairs asks for a test taken in the three years before your visa application for Competent, Proficient and Superior English, depending on the visa. Tests taken on or before 6 August 2025 can be used until 6 August 2028, again depending on the visa.
  • Organisations that choose to accept older results. IDP says some universities accept results up to three years old.
  • The verification service. Organisations can check a Test Report Form older than two years online, but IELTS won't investigate forms more than three years old. That's about checking a form, not about whether a result still counts.

Does IELTS expire?

Not on paper. Nothing on your Test Report Form stops working after two years, and you'll still have the form. What changes is whether anyone accepts it.

IELTS bases the two-year limit on second language loss, sometimes called attrition: if you stop using a language, your skills drop. It recommends that a form more than two years old should only be accepted with proof that you've kept up or improved your English. An IELTS research review in 2023 looked at the rules of 90 universities, 18 medical regulators and four immigration authorities and found the two-year period was overwhelmingly the norm.

So if you've read that IELTS doesn't really expire, that's right about the form and wrong about what universities and visa offices accept.

How to check your IELTS expiry date

  1. Find your test date at the top of your Test Report Form.
  2. Add two years, or three for an Australian visa.
  3. Check which date your organisation measures against. Some count to the day you apply, some to the day they assess your application and some to the start of your course. The table below shows a few.

Two things don't change the date. A One Skill Retake form shows the date of your original four-skill test, and IELTS tells organisations to take that into account. And asking for a new copy of your Test Report Form, such as the redesigned form IELTS introduced in July 2026, doesn't reset the validity period.

IELTS validity by country and organisation

How old an IELTS result can be (checked 29 October 2026)
Where you're applyingHow old the result can be
Canada (Express Entry)Less than 2 years old, both when you complete your Express Entry profile and when you submit your PR application
Australia (Competent, Proficient or Superior English)Taken in the 3 years before you apply, depending on the visa
UK visas (IELTS for UKVI)Awarded in the 2 years before you apply
New Zealand (skilled residence)No more than 2 years old when you apply
UK doctors (GMC)2 years, and valid on the day you sit PLAB 1 or when the GMC approves your registration
UK nurses and midwives (NMC)Taken in the 2 years before the NMC assesses your complete application
University of Toronto (graduate)No older than 2 years when you apply
Harvard Graduate School of Arts and SciencesNo longer than 2 years; for fall 2027 entry, tests taken on or after 5 January 2025
University of Oxford (graduate)Within 2 years of the start of your course
University of Oxford (undergraduate)No age limit, unless your certificate has an expiry date

The Oxford rows show how much it varies, even inside one university. Always read the page for your own course or visa.

IELTS validity for Canada

For Express Entry, IRCC says your results must be less than two years old both when you complete your profile and when you submit your application for permanent residence. If you apply with expired results, IRCC will refuse your application. If your results will expire before you can apply, IRCC's options are to test again, apply before they expire, or decline the invitation and go back into the pool. Express Entry takes IELTS General Training only.

IELTS validity for Australia

Home Affairs asks for a score from the three years before your visa application for Competent, Proficient and Superior English, depending on the visa subclass. It changed its list of approved tests on 7 August 2025; results from a test taken on or before 6 August 2025 can be used until 6 August 2028, depending on the visa. Home Affairs doesn't accept tests taken fully online, and IELTS Online is on its list of examples.

IELTS validity for UK visas

UK visas need a Secure English Language Test such as IELTS for UKVI. GOV.UK says the test must have been awarded in the two years before the date of your application. The UK's medical and nursing regulators set their own two-year rules, shown in the table. The GMC will look at an older certificate with extra evidence that you've kept up your English, such as references covering at least three months of full-time study or work in the last two years, in a country where English is the first and native language.

How long are IELTS scores valid for university admissions?

Usually two years, but measured differently. Toronto counts to the day you apply, Oxford's graduate courses count to the start of your course, and Harvard sets a test date for each intake. A university can accept older results if it chooses, so it's worth asking if yours is just over the line.

Can you extend or renew IELTS?

No. IDP says your Test Report Form can't be extended or revalidated and there's no renewal process. "IELTS renewal" in a requirement usually means taking the test again.

A One Skill Retake won't refresh an old result either. You have to take it within 60 days of your original test, and the new form keeps the original test date.

What to do if your IELTS has expired

  • Ask whether older results are accepted with evidence. IELTS recommends exactly that route, and some organisations, such as the GMC, describe what evidence they take.
  • If not, book a full test. Work back from your deadline. IELTS on computer results usually arrive in 1–2 days and paper results in 13, as our guide to when IELTS results come out explains.
  • If you're in a points pool, check the dates you'll need. For Canada, your result has to be valid when you apply, not just when you entered the pool.
  • Check the score you need now. Requirements change. Our guide to what counts as a good IELTS score lists current requirements for common universities, regulators and visas.

Before you book a new test

If your last test was more than two years ago, your level may have moved in either direction. The first PrepEx IELTS diagnostic is free and gives you a practice range for each of the four skills, with feedback, so you can see where you stand before you pay for a test. It's a practice estimate, not an official result.

More questions about IELTS validity

Does IELTS validity start from the test date or the result date?

The test date, according to IDP. Some organisations word it differently: UK visa rules count from the date the test is awarded. Check the wording on your organisation's page.

How long is an IELTS One Skill Retake result valid?

The retake form shows the date of your original four-skill test, and IELTS tells organisations to take that into account. So where a two-year rule applies, the clock starts at your original test, not the retake.

Does getting a new copy of my Test Report Form reset the validity?

No. IELTS says requesting a new version of your Test Report Form doesn't change or reset the validity period.

Can I use an expired IELTS result for a visa?

Canada, UK visas and New Zealand all want results less than two years old when you apply, and IRCC says it will refuse a permanent residence application made with expired results. Australia accepts a test from the three years before you apply for its Competent, Proficient and Superior English levels, depending on the visa.

How long is IELTS valid for New Zealand?

For skilled residence visas, Immigration New Zealand says your result must be no more than two years old when you apply, and you must have sat the test in person at a test centre. Tests taken at home, such as IELTS Online, aren't accepted.

Why does IELTS expire after two years?

IELTS bases the two-year limit on research into second language loss: skills you don't use tend to fade. Organisations can choose to accept older results, and IELTS suggests they ask for proof that you've kept up your English.

How do I check if my IELTS is still valid?

Look at the test date on your Test Report Form, add two years, and compare it with the rule for your organisation. Organisations verify forms themselves through the IELTS Results Service.

Is IELTS for UKVI valid for two years?

Yes, for UK visa applications. GOV.UK says test results are valid for two years from the date the test is awarded, and the test must be awarded in the two years before you apply.
