IELTS Band Score Calculation: Rounding and Section Scores
Work out your overall IELTS band, understand Reading and Listening marks, and check why an overall target is different from a minimum score in every skill.

On this page
Your overall IELTS band is the average of your Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking bands, rounded to the nearest half band. An average of 6.25 becomes 6.5; an average of 6.75 becomes 7.0. Each of the four sections has equal weight in that overall calculation.
That calculation answers one question: what overall band do these four results produce? It does not tell you whether you meet a university's or employer's minimum in every skill. This guide separates the arithmetic from the decision about what to practise next.
Official scoring information checked on 2 October 2026. The numerical examples below are original illustrations, not learner results.
How to calculate your overall IELTS band
- Write down the four section bands from your Test Report Form.
- Add them together.
- Divide the total by four.
- Round the average to the nearest whole or half band.
For example, Listening 7.5, Reading 7.0, Writing 6.0 and Speaking 6.5 add up to 27. Divide 27 by four and the average is 6.75, which gives an overall band of 7.0. These rounding rules are explained by IDP's IELTS score calculator guide.
| Four section bands | Total | Average | Overall band |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6.0, 6.0, 6.0, 6.5 | 24.5 | 6.125 | 6.0 |
| 6.0, 6.0, 6.5, 6.5 | 25.0 | 6.25 | 6.5 |
| 6.0, 6.5, 6.5, 6.5 | 25.5 | 6.375 | 6.5 |
| 6.5, 6.5, 6.5, 7.0 | 26.5 | 6.625 | 6.5 |
| 6.5, 6.5, 7.0, 7.0 | 27.0 | 6.75 | 7.0 |
| 6.5, 7.0, 7.0, 7.0 | 27.5 | 6.875 | 7.0 |
Keep the unrounded average until the final step. Do not round each pair of scores and then average those rounded answers. That adds a second rounding operation which does not belong in the calculation.
Why an overall 7 may still miss your requirement
Imagine a course asks for overall 7.0 with no section below 6.5. The worked example with Listening 7.5, Reading 7.0, Writing 6.0 and Speaking 6.5 produces overall 7.0, but Writing is 6.0. The overall requirement is met; the Writing requirement is not.
Now imagine the Writing band rises to 6.5 while the other three stay the same. The average becomes 6.875, which still rounds to overall 7.0. The headline score has not changed, but that half-band increase could satisfy the course's section requirement. This is why tracking only the overall result can hide useful progress.
Use a five-line checklist: required overall score, required Listening, required Reading, required Writing and required Speaking. Copy these from the receiving organisation's current rules. If it gives separate rules for score age, test type or retakes, record those alongside the bands.
IELTS Reading and Listening: marks out of 40
Listening and Reading each contain 40 questions, with one mark for each correct answer. The raw mark is converted to a band. Academic and General Training Reading use different conversions; a raw mark of 30 does not mean the same Reading band in both tests.
The table shows the average marks published by IELTS, not fixed boundaries for every test version. IELTS states that the precise marks needed vary slightly between versions. See the official scoring explanation.
| Target band | Listening / 40 | Academic Reading / 40 | General Training Reading / 40 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 16 | 15 | 23 |
| 6 | 23 | 23 | 30 |
| 7 | 30 | 30 | 35 |
| 8 | 35 | 35 | Not listed in this official summary |
When reviewing a practice test, use the conversion supplied for that material where available. Keep the raw mark too: moving from 24 to 28 correct answers can show progress even when a particular practice conversion reports the same band. Compare complete tests under similar conditions; five untimed questions are not interchangeable with a full timed section.
How Writing and Speaking differ
Writing and Speaking are judged using assessment criteria. They are not marked by counting correct answers out of 40. In Writing, Task 2 contributes twice as much as Task 1 to the section score. That internal weighting does not give Writing extra weight in the four-skill overall calculation.
A useful Writing review separates how well you answer the task, how clearly ideas connect, vocabulary use and grammar. Speaking review considers fluency and coherence, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. Read the official Writing criteria and Speaking band descriptors for the assessment framework.
A word counter cannot calculate your Writing band. Nor can counting pauses determine your Speaking band. If a practice service supplies a number, examine the evidence behind it: the specific response, feedback, task conditions and limitations. Our guide to AI Writing score accuracy explains how to use that feedback.
Turn the calculation into a study decision
Start with the skill that blocks your actual requirement. If all section minimums are met but the overall band is short, compare the work needed in each skill instead of assuming the lowest number is always the fastest route upward.
For Reading and Listening, keep an error log with the question type, evidence you missed and reason for the error. For Writing, revise one response against a specific criterion before writing another. For Speaking, record a fresh answer after reviewing one identifiable issue. A plan such as “explain supporting ideas more fully” is easier to act on than “get 7”.

Common band-score questions
Does 6.25 round to 6.5 in IELTS?
Yes, for the overall average. Likewise, 6.75 rounds to 7.0. Do not apply those examples to a raw mark out of 40.
Does 6.625 become 7?
No. It rounds to 6.5 because that is the nearest half band. The boundary for an overall 7.0 is an average of 6.75.
Can a stronger skill make up for a weaker skill?
It can raise the overall average. It cannot erase a separate minimum that your receiving organisation sets for the weaker skill.
Is 30 out of 40 always band 7?
No. IELTS lists 30 as an average for Listening and Academic Reading band 7, and General Training Reading band 6. Exact conversions can vary by test version.
Can I combine my best section scores from different tests?
Do not create your own combined official result. Check the receiving organisation's rules. An eligible One Skill Retake has its own report and acceptance conditions.
