When Do IELTS Results Come Out? Result Times, Delays and Withheld Results
IELTS on computer results usually arrive in 1–2 days, paper results in 13 and IELTS Online in 6–8. Why a result can be late, what "withheld" means and what to do while you wait.

On this page
IELTS on computer results usually come out within 1–2 days of your test, and IELTS gives 1–5 days as the full window. IELTS on paper takes 13 days, or 7 in India. IELTS Online takes 6–8 days. You get an email or a portal notice when your scores are ready.
If that date has passed and you still have nothing, the most common reason is an extra check. When IELTS holds a result back for a longer review, it emails you to say the result is withheld. That email isn't a decision about your score, and there are still things you can do about your deadline while you wait.
We checked the timings and rules below against IELTS, British Council and IDP pages on 28 October 2026. Your test centre has the final word on your booking.
How long does the IELTS result take?
| Test | When results arrive |
|---|---|
| IELTS on computer (Academic or General Training) | Usually 1–2 days; official window 1–5 days |
| IELTS on computer with Writing on Paper | Within 5 days |
| IELTS for UKVI | 1–5 days |
| IELTS on paper | 13 days after the test (7 days in India) |
| IELTS Online, taken at home | 6–8 days |
| IELTS for UKVI Life Skills | Up to 9 days |
| One Skill Retake | 3–5 days |
| Remark (Enquiry on Results) | The same day to 21 days after you apply |
Days count from your test date. On its fast results page, IELTS says about 80% of computer results are ready within two days and about half within one day, based on its May–June 2024 data.
Writing on Paper is an option IELTS planned for selected countries from mid-2026: you take IELTS on computer but handwrite the two Writing tasks. It isn't available for IELTS for UKVI.
All four scores come out together on one Test Report Form. Speaking isn't released on its own.
What time do IELTS results come out?
IELTS doesn't publish a release time. Results go out once marking and identity checks are finished, so there is no set hour to wait for. IELTS also doesn't say whether results are released at weekends. The British Council does say that national holidays such as Christmas and New Year can delay results.
Where you see your result depends on who you booked with:
- British Council: an email with a link to the Test Taker Portal. If you took IELTS on computer or IELTS Online, you can download your Test Report Form there too.
- IDP: your IDP account. IDP says results shown online are provisional until you receive your official Test Report Form.
- IELTS USA: an email with a link to your IELTS USA account.
To sign in you need your candidate number and the passport or ID number you registered with. The British Council won't give results by email or over the phone.
Why is my IELTS result not showing online?
Check three things first. Has the normal window for your test passed? That's 13 days for paper and up to 5 days for computer. Are you signing in with the same ID number you booked with? And is there an email from IELTS in your spam folder? IDP says IELTS emails you if a result is withheld or cancelled.
If the window has passed and there's no email, contact your test centre. Results are issued by centres, and both the British Council and IDP send these questions to the centre.
Why is my IELTS result delayed?
The British Council gives these reasons:
- random quality control checks to make sure scores are fair and accurate
- a review of test performance after technical issues, discrepancies or suspected malpractice
- national holidays
IDP says the two most common reasons are that IELTS needs to check your test again, or that it is checking how the test was run. The second is about the test session as a whole. Several of the busiest withheld-result threads on r/IELTS in 2026 came from groups of people in Canada who sat IELTS on the same day.
Some centres send a short "delay" or "additional quality checks" email before the result date. Your result is still being processed, and some of these emails give a date for the next update.
What does "IELTS result withheld" mean?
It means IELTS has paused your result while it reviews something about your test or how it was run. In the test terms, the IELTS partners keep the right to withhold results "temporarily or permanently", or to cancel results already issued, if they consider them unreliable because of suspected malpractice or another irregularity in the test process.
That isn't a finding against you. IDP lists extra validation of test performance, random quality assurance checks, suspected malpractice or irregularity, and technical issues as reasons. The emails people post on r/IELTS mostly say the same thing: results are routinely analysed before they're issued, and yours needs further review.
Outcomes vary. Some people in those threads posted their scores a few days later. One person who sat a paper test on 7 March 2026 heard in May that their result had been permanently withheld.
How long does a withheld IELTS result take?
IELTS publishes no time limit. IDP says some people get their results within a week or two, while others wait a month or up to three months. The withheld-result emails people have shared usually name a date for the next update, and some say the review can take up to eight weeks.
Write that date down and plan as if you won't have the score before it.
What to do if your IELTS result is withheld
- Look for a deadline in the email. Some ask for a statement within a few days. The terms also say you may be asked for extra writing and speaking samples and, in exceptional cases, to retake one or more parts of the test. Reply on time and stick to facts about your test day.
- Tell the university, employer or adviser now. Ask whether they can accept your result later or extend the deadline. Don't wait for the update date before asking.
- If your deadline is close, book another test. IDP says you can take IELTS again instead of waiting, and if you end up with two results you choose which one to use. IELTS on computer is the fastest route to a new score. The top reply in one of the busiest r/IELTS withheld threads says the same: rebook rather than miss a deadline waiting.
- If the result is permanently withheld, IDP says you can ask Cambridge English to reconsider within 21 days, for a fee. Ask your test centre how to apply.
Use the wait to practise
When the result comes, you might need a resit, a One Skill Retake or a remark. One Skill Retake is only for IELTS on computer and has to be taken within 60 days of your original test. A remark has to be requested within six weeks of your test date, and the British Council says it can't lower your score. Our guide to One Skill Retake, a remark or a full resit helps you choose.
If one skill went badly, start on it now instead of waiting to find out. The first PrepEx IELTS diagnostic is free and gives you a practice range for each of the four skills, with feedback, so you can see which one needs work. It's a practice estimate, not an official result, and it can't tell you what a withheld score will be.

More questions about IELTS results
When will I get my IELTS Speaking result?
With the rest of your scores. Your Test Report Form shows all four section scores and your overall band, and Speaking isn't released separately.
Will I get my IELTS result by post?
It depends on the test. IELTS on paper comes with a paper Test Report Form. IELTS Online gives you an electronic one (eTRF) to download. For IELTS on computer it depends on the country: the British Council issues computer results electronically only, while some other centres still issue paper forms. Your centre can send your result to up to five organisations by post for free, and by e-delivery to as many as you like.
How long does an IELTS remark take?
From the same day you apply to 21 days, partly depending on how many sections you ask to be re-marked. You need to apply within six weeks of your test date. The fee is refunded if your band score changes, and the British Council says a remark can't lower your score.
How long do One Skill Retake results take?
3–5 days. You get a new Test Report Form with the retaken score and your other three original scores, and you can choose which form to use.
Can I book another IELTS test while my result is withheld?
Yes. IDP says you can take the test again instead of waiting. If you then have two results, you can choose which one to use.
Do I get a refund if my IELTS result is withheld?
The test terms say that if you're suspected of malpractice, you may not receive a result and your test fee won't be refunded. In any other case, ask your test centre.
Is my online IELTS result official?
IDP says results shown online are provisional until you receive your official Test Report Form. Universities and other organisations check results through the IELTS Results Service, so send yours through your test centre or booking portal.
How long is an IELTS result valid?
The British Council says two years. Check what your university or visa office accepts, too.
