Duolingo English Test Fee 2026: How Much the DET Costs

The Duolingo English Test (DET) costs US$70 for one test. Duolingo lists that single price in US dollars for every country, so your bank converts it when you pay: about CAD 99 in Canada, BRL 385 in Brazil or EUR 63 in France. Two tests bought together cost US$118, or US$59 each, and getting your results within 12 hours instead of two days adds US$39.

Sending your results to universities costs nothing, and so does Duolingo's practice test. The fee isn't refundable, so the money to watch is the money you can lose: a wasted attempt, or a test that expires before you take it.

We checked these prices and rules on 7 November 2026 against Duolingo's readiness guide, its purchase guide, the DET Help Center and the DET terms of service. Duolingo can change its prices, so the order summary at checkout is the amount that counts.

How much does the Duolingo English Test cost?

Here is everything you can pay for on the DET website, and the things that are free.

What the US$70 fee includes

• One test credit, which you have to use within 21 days of buying it. Duolingo won't extend that date.
• Up to three attempts to complete and upload the test on that credit. Every time you start the test counts as an attempt, including a test that freezes or one you quit.
• Your result within two days: an overall score and eight subscores, on the 10–160 scale.
• Sending that result to up to 25 institutions at no charge (you can ask support for more) during the two years it stays valid.
• A certificate you can save as a PDF, and a shareable link that lets an institution check it's genuine.

A credit gets you at most one certified result, and paying doesn't guarantee one. If your result is invalidated because a rule was broken, you may have to buy another test (see how attempts work). For what the score itself means, see our DET scoring guide.

Duolingo English Test fee by country

Duolingo doesn't set a price for each country the way ETS does for the TOEFL, which costs anything from US$170 to US$475 depending on where you take it (our TOEFL fee guide lists them all). The DET has one price in US dollars. What you pay in your own currency depends on your bank's exchange rate and any fee it charges for paying in a foreign currency.

The table converts US$70 and the US$118 bundle at the reference exchange rate on 7 November 2026, rounded. Use it as a guide, then check the order summary before you pay. Each of these countries has its own section below, and more currencies follow after them.

Duolingo English Test fee in Canada

US$70 came to about CAD 99 on 7 November 2026, and the two-test bundle about CAD 166. Duolingo's own checkout example uses a Canadian address and shows the order in US dollars, so your bank does the conversion and may add a foreign-currency fee. For comparison, the TOEFL iBT costs US$249 in Canada, plus tax.

Check what you need the score for before you pay. Canadian universities and colleges set their own rules, and many accept the DET, but for permanent residence through Express Entry, IRCC accepts only CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core in English. Duolingo English Test fee in the USA

In the United States you pay US$70 with no currency conversion: US$118 for two tests, and US$39 on top if you want results within 12 hours. The TOEFL iBT costs US$280 in the US plus sales tax, so the DET is a quarter of the price. Before you choose it, check that every university on your list accepts it.

Duolingo English Test fee in Brazil (Duolingo English Test preço)

US$70 was about BRL 385 on 7 November 2026, and the bundle about BRL 649. Because the charge is in US dollars, your card bill also includes IOF, the tax on purchases in a foreign currency, so the total in reais ends up a little higher than the conversion. The TOEFL iBT costs US$250 in Brazil.

Duolingo English Test fee in France (Duolingo English Test prix)

About EUR 63 for one test and EUR 106 for the bundle at 7 November 2026 rates, and the same in the other euro countries. Your bank may add a charge for converting from euros to dollars. The TOEFL iBT costs US$294 in France, VAT included.

Duolingo English Test fee in Taiwan (Duolingo English Test 費用)

About TWD 2,300 for one test, or TWD 3,880 for two, at 7 November 2026 rates. You pay by credit card on the DET website, so use a card that allows overseas online payments. The TOEFL iBT costs US$272 in Taiwan.

Duolingo English Test fee in Turkey (Duolingo English Test fiyatı)

About TRY 3,510 for one test and TRY 5,920 for the bundle on 7 November 2026. The lira's exchange rate moves often, so work out the amount on the day you pay. The TOEFL iBT costs US$185 in Turkey plus tax, one of the lowest TOEFL fees anywhere, and still more than twice the DET.

Duolingo English Test fee in India

US$70, about INR 6,590 at 7 November 2026 rates (INR 11,100 for the bundle). Because the price is in US dollars, the rupee amount moves with the exchange rate. If you see US$59 quoted, that's the per-test price inside the two-test bundle; a single test is US$70.

For comparison, a TOEFL iBT in India costs INR 15,729 plus 18% GST, about INR 18,560 (ETS India), and IDP India lists IELTS at INR 19,000. The DET costs about a third of either.

Duolingo English Test fee in Mexico (Duolingo English Test precio)

About MXN 1,310 for one test and MXN 2,200 for two at 7 November 2026 rates. The TOEFL iBT costs US$265 in Mexico, so the DET is roughly a quarter of the price if your universities accept it.

Duolingo English Test fee in Pakistan

US$70, which came to about PKR 19,400 on 7 November 2026, or about PKR 32,600 for the two-test bundle. You pay by card on the DET website, so use a card that's enabled for international online payments. Banks may add a charge for paying in a foreign currency, which pushes the rupee total up a little. The TOEFL iBT costs US$230 in Pakistan.

Duolingo English Test fee in Bangladesh

About BDT 8,720 for one test and BDT 14,700 for two, converted from US$70 and US$118. The fee is the same whether you're applying to universities in the US, Canada or anywhere else; only the exchange rate changes.

Duolingo exam fee in Nepal

About NPR 10,500 for one test, or NPR 17,800 for the bundle. If you don't have a card that works for international payments, a relative or friend can pay for you by logging in to your DET account and buying the test there. Any refund goes back to the card that paid.

How much is the Duolingo English Test in naira?

US$70 was about NGN 94,400 on 7 November 2026, and the bundle about NGN 159,000. The naira's exchange rate can move quickly, so work out the amount on the day you pay rather than relying on an old figure from a forum or a fee list.

The test isn't available in Iran or to anyone with an Iranian ID.

Duolingo English Test bundle: two tests for US$118

The bundle gives you two test credits for US$118 instead of US$140, so you save US$22, but only if you take the second test.

• You have 21 days from purchase to take the first test. When you get its result, you have another 21 days to take the second.
• Bundles can't be refunded, and the credits can't be shared with another account.
• If you add faster results, they apply only to the first test.
• You still have to wait for one result before starting the next test, and you can buy at most three tests in any 30 days.

It's worth it if your practice scores are close to your target or a deadline doesn't leave room to buy again later. If your practice estimates are already comfortably above what your universities ask for, buy one test.

Duolingo English Test faster results price

Faster results cost US$39 on top of the test fee. You pick them at checkout, where the option is called "Same day", and your result arrives within 12 hours of finishing the test instead of within two days.

The test, the proctoring and the scoring stay the same. Faster results don't make a certified result more likely, they can't be refunded, and once your test is in review Duolingo can't speed it up, so decide before you pay. They make sense when an application deadline falls less than two days after you can sit the test. Otherwise the free two-day results are enough.

Is the Duolingo English Test free?

No. A certified test that you can send to universities costs US$70, unless an institution gives you a fee waiver or a coupon that covers the whole fee. These parts are free:

• Duolingo's practice test, which you can take as many times as you like once you've created an account. It uses the same question types and the same adaptive format, and ends with an estimated score range.
• Sending your certified result to institutions.
• A retake after a technical problem, if you still have attempts left on your credit.

Duolingo English Test fee waiver

Duolingo's Access Program gives free tests to students facing financial barriers. Duolingo issues the waivers only to institutions and non-profit groups, which pass them on to students, so the way to get one is to ask:

• the admissions or international office of a university you're applying to, since any institution that accepts the DET can be given waivers;
• your school counsellor;
• a non-profit that helps low-income students apply to university.

Recruitment agencies can't get them. A waiver covers the whole test, and each student can have only one. Once you accept it you have 21 days to take the test, and the normal rules on attempts apply, so be ready before you accept.

Duolingo English Test coupon codes and vouchers

A coupon or voucher code pays for part or all of the test. You choose your test as usual, then select Apply coupon code on the payment screen. A few rules:

• You can use only one code per purchase, and codes can't be combined.
• After you apply a code, you have 21 days to take the test, and that can't be extended.
• Codes have no cash value and can't be used to get money back on a test you've already bought.
• A counsellor's invite code shares your result with them, but it doesn't take anything off the price.

Universities, schools and Duolingo's partner organisations give out codes, and some companies sell discounted vouchers. Check who you're buying from. Duolingo refunds only to the original payment method, so if you paid someone else for a code, any problem with it is between you and that seller.

Duolingo English Test refund policy

Duolingo's terms say all payments are non-refundable. That covers tests you never take, credits that expire after 21 days, bundles, faster results, and tests invalidated because a rule was broken.

The exception is a problem on Duolingo's side: the test fails so you can't finish it, or your results don't arrive within a reasonable time. Then Duolingo will refund you, give you a credit or fix the problem, whichever it chooses. You have to report it in writing within 24 hours, you mustn't have caused it, and you must have met all the test requirements. After most technical problems, Duolingo says you can simply take the test again without paying.

How many attempts for the Duolingo test?

Each credit gives you three attempts to complete and upload the test. Starting the test counts as an attempt even if your internet drops, the app freezes or you quit partway. What happens after a failed attempt depends on the reason:

• A technical error: take the test again for free, if you have attempts left.
• A problem with your ID: upload a valid ID; you don't have to retake the test.
• A broken rule: you can usually retake it for free on the same credit, but a second rule violation on that credit makes it expire, and you have to buy a new test.
• Possible misconduct: the credit expires at once. You can buy a new test and appeal the result.

Once your credit is used, a retake is a new purchase at US$70, or the second credit of a bundle; there's no retake discount. There's no paid re-mark either: you can't appeal a valid result, and appeals are only for some invalid results, within 72 hours.

To avoid losing attempts, sort out your set-up before you pay. Duolingo asks for an internet connection of at least 2 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload (a wired connection is safer than Wi-Fi), one screen, no headphones or notes, and a phone camera that records you, your screen and your keyboard. How to pay the Duolingo English Test fee online

1. Create an account on the Duolingo English Test website and log in.
2. Select Purchase a test and choose 1 test or 2 tests.
3. Choose when you want your results: in 2 days (free) or the same day, within 12 hours (US$39).
4. Enter your email, country and postal code. If you have a coupon, select Apply coupon code now.
5. Check the order summary, enter your payment details and pay. Your credit appears on your DET home page, and the 21 days start.

Duolingo accepts all major credit cards, and Alipay in China. Someone else, such as a parent, can pay for you by logging in to your account, but a refund can only go back to the card or account that paid.

Is Duolingo cheaper than IELTS?

Yes, by a lot. The DET is US$70. The TOEFL iBT costs between US$170 and US$475 depending on the country, for example US$230 in Pakistan and US$280 in the United States. IELTS prices are set locally; in India, IDP lists IELTS at INR 19,000, almost three times the rupee cost of the DET.

How to keep your DET cost down

• Practise before you pay. Take Duolingo's free practice test and free graded tasks on PrepEx, and buy the real test when your estimates reach the score you need.
• Buy only when you're ready to sit the test, because the credit lasts just 21 days.
• Check your computer, phone camera, internet and room first, so you don't lose attempts.
• Skip faster results unless a deadline is less than two days away.
• Choose the bundle only if you expect to take a second test.
• Ask your universities about fee waivers or coupons before paying full price.
