PrepExDoes typing the answer mean a computer marks it too? I'm not clear how official marking is different from an AI Writing checker used for practice.

Typing doesn't change who assesses Writing. IELTS says certificated examiners mark each task against four criteria. An AI practice checker isn't the official marker.

So if a checker gives 7, it is still just a practice estimate, even if it says it used the IELTS criteria?

Yes. Referring to the criteria doesn't make it an official result. I'd use the comments to find something concrete to check, not treat the number as a booked-test prediction.
