What is TOEFL Listen and Choose?
Listen and Choose is PrepEx's short name for the TOEFL Listening task that ETS calls Listen and Choose a Response. You hear a brief question or statement and select the most appropriate reply from four written options. Earlier PrepEx pages also use the name Choose a Response.
The reply needs to fit the speaker's purpose. It may answer a question, decline an invitation, correct an assumption, or respond to a concern. Repeating a word from the recording is not enough.
These 12 original questions mix everyday situations and response types. This is untimed learning practice: you can replay recordings and open transcripts. It is not an official ETS test or a full Listening section, and 12 is the length of this practice set.

How to get better at Listen and Choose
- Identify the purpose before comparing replies. A question about where needs a place; a question about how soon needs a time. A statement may call for an explanation or acknowledgment.
- Listen beyond the first word. “Could you” often introduces a request. “Would you rather” asks for a preference. The rest of the sentence tells you which action or choice matters.
- Allow negative answers. A refusal can complete an exchange naturally. Do not choose a reply just because it agrees with the speaker.
- Review the misunderstanding. After checking, replay the sentence and identify why your choice failed: wrong time, wrong object, a literal reading, or a reply to a different question.
For another session, use the 25-question Listen and Choose audio collection. For longer recordings, try the mixed TOEFL Listening questions or the free Conversation practice.
Listen and Choose: common questions
Is Listen and Choose the same as Choose a Response?
Yes. PrepEx now calls this task Listen and Choose. ETS uses the fuller name Listen and Choose a Response. The existing five-question Choose a Response preview remains available as a separate exercise.
Are these questions free, and do I need an account?
All 12 questions, recordings, transcripts, and explanations on this page are free. You do not need an account. Results stay in this page and are not saved to your practice history.
Should I read the transcript before listening?
For listening practice, leave it closed on your first attempt. After answering, replay the audio and open the transcript to check words or phrases you missed. Transcripts and replay are learning aids on this page.
Does my result predict my TOEFL Listening score?
No. The result shows how many of these 12 questions you answered correctly. It does not convert to a TOEFL band score or assess the whole Listening section.
Where can I practice the other TOEFL Listening tasks?
Try Conversations, Announcements, and Academic Talks. The TOEFL Listening guide explains the task types together.
