Report the visual information, not your opinion
IELTS Academic Task 1 asks you to describe visual information such as a chart, table, map or process. Write at least 150 words and plan to spend about 20 minutes on the task. Select the important features and make accurate comparisons. A General Training letter has a different purpose and should not use this report structure. Official IELTS Writing guidance.
Work through a small data example
The table shows the percentage of students using three transport modes at a fictional college. These invented figures are an original teaching example, not research data or an official test question.

Before drafting, notice three things: buses remain the most common option, cycling gains share and both bus and car use decline. The main story is not simply that “there were changes.”
Possible overview: Overall, the bus remained the most common way of travelling to the college, although its share fell. Cycling became more popular and overtook car travel by the end of the period.
Supporting comparison: Bicycle use rose from 20% to 35%, an increase of 15 percentage points. In contrast, the proportion travelling by car fell by five percentage points to 25%.
These are short extracts for analysis, not a complete Task 1 response. “Percentage points” describes the difference between two percentages. A rise from 20% to 35% is not a 15% relative increase. Also avoid inventing a reason: the table does not establish that a new cycle lane caused the change.
Give each paragraph a job
- Introduce the visual: explain what is measured, where and when, using your own wording.
- State the overview: identify the most important pattern, contrast or process structure.
- Group related details: compare categories that belong together instead of listing every number in order.
- Check accuracy: units, dates, direction of change and the subject of each comparison must match the visual.
For a process diagram, the overview might describe the number of broad stages and whether the process is linear or cyclical. For a map, it might describe the overall change in land use. Do not force a rise-and-fall template onto a visual with no time series.
Practise selection before writing a full report
Open IELTS Writing practice and choose a Task 1 visual. First write only an overview and two comparisons. Check each statement against the chart, then draft the complete response. When reviewing feedback, distinguish a language problem from a data problem: fluent wording does not repair a reversed trend.
Keep a list of mistakes that recur across different visual types. If your reports repeatedly miss the overview, practise selecting the two main features before adding more vocabulary. Balance this work with Task 2 essay practice, then use a full Academic mock to check your writing pace.
