Art historians study eras such as the Renaissance and the Baroque to trace changes over time. Scholars compare works from these periods to identify shared styles and techniques across cultures by examining historical artifacts. This approach helps researchers understand artistic development and explain why ideas spread between civilizations through cultural exchange over centuries. It also helps show how classical art can influence later artists around the world through museums, education, and public appreciation of creativity. A borrowed technique may serve a different purpose in its new setting.

Answers in order: compare, from, periods, identify, styles, techniques, cultures, examining, artifacts, approach.

The opening sentence names historical eras, so "periods" refers back to those eras. Scholars "compare" works "from" these periods "to identify" similarities: the infinitive identifies the purpose of the comparison. "Styles" and "techniques" are the artistic features shared across "cultures." After the preposition "by," "examining" describes the method, and "artifacts" names the historical objects examined. "This approach" refers to that comparison and examination, which helps explain artistic development and the spread of ideas. Each answer must match the visible prefix, missing-letter count, grammar, and meaning. The intended first word is "compare," but "compile" also fits: scholars can collect works for analysis. Both completions are accepted in this preview.

What is TOEFL Complete the Words?

Complete the Words is a TOEFL iBT Reading task. You restore missing letters in a short paragraph, using the visible beginning of each word and the meaning of the surrounding text. A task contains ten incomplete words. It tests vocabulary in context, including the small grammatical words that connect ideas.

On this page, each underscore stands for one missing letter. Type only the missing part, not the whole word. The interactive exercise checks your answers and lets you review the completed words. Its one-minute timer is a PrepEx practice setting, not a separate official TOEFL time limit.

Format checked November 7, 2026 against ETS Reading guidance and ETS Reading lesson plans. This is independent PrepEx practice, not an official ETS question.

Complete the Words examples with answers

These short teaching examples isolate one clue at a time. They are not full test passages. In the exercise above, you need to use several clues together across a connected paragraph.

Additional learning notes and examples by the PrepEx content team.

1. Use meaning and the word length

A timetable helps visitors plan their journey. They can ch___ the departure time before leaving home.

Answer: check. Type eck. Looking at the departure time lets visitors plan when to leave. The five-letter word check fits that meaning and the visible ch. After can, use the base verb; checks would be the wrong form and too long.

2. Notice how ideas connect

The first trial produced no useful data, s_ the team changed its method.

Answer: so. Type o. Changing the method is a result of the unsuccessful trial. So expresses that relationship. A word can be short and still carry an important part of the sentence's meaning.

3. Check grammar and spelling together

The library keeps several cop___ of its most popular books so more students can borrow them.

Answer: copies. Type ies. Several requires a plural noun, and the sentence describes multiple copies of the same books. The plural of copy changes y to ies. Adding only s would not complete the spelling or fill the three missing letters.

How to improve at Complete the Words

  1. Read the whole paragraph first. Establish the topic and the relationship between the sentences before filling individual gaps.
  2. Identify the word's job. Decide whether the sentence needs a noun, verb, adjective or connecting word. Check nearby articles, subjects and prepositions.
  3. Match both the letters and the meaning. A familiar word with the right beginning may still be wrong for this sentence. Read beyond the blank before deciding.
  4. Check endings. Look for plural nouns, verb agreement and tense. Count the missing letters and enter only that part.
  5. Review the reason for each error. Record whether you missed the meaning, chose the wrong grammatical form or misspelled the ending. Practice that specific issue with a fresh passage.
