What is the latest HOELT news?
The Home Office confirmed on 3 September that HOELT remains in procurement. The answers reviewed do not announce a supplier, candidate booking date or test price.
Responding to MP Blake Stephenson in written answer 23487, Jo White said the planned service would improve accessibility, strengthen protection against fraud and use a regulated fee. The question covered both HOELT and the Life in the UK test.
This is a useful update after the July final-offer deadline. It confirms the department's position while the competition continues. It gives applicants no reason to treat the new test as available today.
What did the Home Office say about remote-test security?
A separate answer on 3 September, number 23486, says all Home Office delivery models must meet integrity requirements covering data and cyber security, accessibility, and fraud prevention. It applies those principles to both HOELT and the Life in the UK test.
The answer does not publish a technical audit or candidate equipment rules. It therefore cannot tell you which laptop, camera setup or room arrangement the eventual HOELT will require. Nor does it establish that the service has already passed independent security testing.
The context is a continuing disagreement over remote assessment. On 17 March 2026, the IELTS partnership withdrew from the HOELT tender, citing concerns about security, quality and integrity. Its statement limited that decision to this procurement and said it would continue working with UKVI. The September answers set out the government's position; they do not resolve that disagreement.
When will HOELT launch? Keep these dates separate
The published tender timetable and an earlier ministerial answer refer to different stages. A supplier can start implementing a contract well before candidates can take the test.

The public tender says its timetable is indicative and may be superseded by the instructions supplied to bidders. These dates are published targets, not evidence that every stage happened on schedule. Our HOELT tender and bidders guide explains the procurement process.
The late-2027/early-2028 indication comes from Mike Tapp's answer dated 16 January 2026. It is older planning information, not a newly announced September launch date. The September answers reviewed do not provide a replacement timetable.
How much will the HOELT cost?
The September fee statement gives no amount. Regulation describes how the price will be controlled; it does not let us calculate what a candidate will pay or establish that HOELT will be cheaper than IELTS.
For budgeting, wait for a candidate fee schedule that explains the booking charge, resits, cancellation terms and any local differences. A price comparison is useful only when it compares what the two bookings actually include.
Is IELTS for UKVI still accepted in September 2026?
Yes. The current GOV.UK Secure English Language Test guidance still lists IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Life Skills. Its latest recorded update, on 28 August 2026, concerns approved test-centre lists.
If your route requires a SELT, check the exact approved test and provider, the required skills and CEFR level, and the approved location before booking. The word “IELTS” alone does not establish that a particular booking meets your visa requirement.

How should you prepare while HOELT details are still emerging?
Start with the application you actually plan to make. Write down its deadline, the evidence it accepts and the English skills you need to improve. Then choose practice that addresses those skills.
For example, if you struggle to explain an opinion aloud, record a short answer, listen for unclear sentences, and try again with one specific improvement. If reading is slow, summarise a short article without looking back. These exercises give you useful practice without depending on predictions about a future exam.

Before buying anything marketed as “HOELT preparation”, look for a clear account of what it teaches and which official specification it follows. General English exercises can be useful. Claims to reproduce an unreleased exam need evidence.
A published candidate handbook, booking service, fee schedule or transition policy would give applicants something concrete to plan around. HOELT booking, price and launch questions
Can I book the HOELT in September 2026?
The official sources checked on 6 September contain no public HOELT booking date. If you need a test now, check the current GOV.UK SELT guidance and your immigration route.
Is there a confirmed HOELT launch date?
No candidate booking date is confirmed in the sources reviewed. A January ministerial answer indicated implementation in late 2027 or early 2028; this remains an earlier planning indication.
Has the HOELT price been announced?
The September answer refers to a regulated fee but gives no candidate price. There is no published amount in these sources to compare with IELTS for UKVI.
Is IELTS for UKVI still accepted?
The current GOV.UK SELT guidance still lists IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Life Skills. Acceptance depends on the exact test, the skills and level required, and your application route.
Does HOELT replace the Life in the UK test?
The September parliamentary answers discuss them as separate services. They do not announce that passing HOELT would replace the Life in the UK test.
