If a short diagnostic identifies a Reading weakness, would you work on that first or check it with a full mock? I'm trying to separate finding a practice target from checking exam timing.

I'd use the short test to choose something to check, then use a full mock to practise the full timing. A short result is only a starting point.

If one Reading question is wrong, how do you choose what to practise? One wrong answer seems a small amount.

One wrong answer isn't much evidence. Check why it was wrong: an unfamiliar word, or a claim the passage didn't make? Try fresh questions to see whether the same difficulty repeats.

Would you leave the timer off for that fresh question, if the problem is understanding the sentence?

mellowbrook

Yes, for working out the meaning. Then try timed practice separately. Keeping the two separate can help show where the difficulty is.

Neither score guarantees the real result, though. A full mock samples more tasks; it still gives practice evidence rather than an official band.
