How should I start IELTS preparation while still in college?

Hi, I'm in college and want to study abroad after my final year. I can speak, read and write in English, but I'm not sure where to start with IELTS. Should I try a practice test first or learn about each section? If you started preparing during college, what did you do in the first week? I would like a simple starting point that I can manage with my classes.
