Online or classroom IELTS classes:
compare the teaching you will receive.

Use a format matrix and a worked calendar to compare attendance, individual feedback and independent study.

In this guide

Choose an IELTS class format by comparing the teaching you need, the sessions you can attend and the feedback you will actually receive. Online and classroom describe where learning happens; private and group describe how attention is shared. Compare both dimensions before deciding. Neither format guarantees a better IELTS result.

A live online group, a classroom group, a private video lesson and a recorded course are different arrangements. Providers sometimes use “online course” for all of them. Ask whether a teacher is present, whether you can ask questions and whether anyone reviews your work.

Compare the four main live class arrangements

British Council's preparation course directory includes both remote and classroom teaching, with private and group options. The existence of those formats does not establish that one produces higher scores. Use this matrix to decide what to investigate in a particular offer.

Class formats and questions to ask
FormatMay fit whenCheck the actual offer
Live online groupYou can attend regularly from a quiet location and want interaction with other learners.Group size, speaking turns, breakout support, time zone and feedback arrangements.
Classroom groupA regular place and timetable help you attend, and travel is manageable.Total travel time, task level, individual review and how missed classes are handled.
Private online lessonYou have a specific issue to discuss and need appointment flexibility.Connection and audio quality, work-sharing method, preparation and review included.
Private in-person lessonYou value direct interaction and have suitable local availability.Scheduling, travel, lesson purpose and what happens between appointments.

A class can combine formats. For example, a group course might include separate private reviews. Evaluate the actual components rather than assuming that “hybrid” means extra individual attention.

Is the online course live, recorded or self-study?

Recorded explanations can be convenient when your schedule changes. You can pause a lesson and return to a point you missed. They cannot respond to your particular misunderstanding unless the course separately includes questions, marking or live support.

For a live class, check how you will participate. Watching a teacher speak to a large audience is a different experience from taking turns in a small group. A recording of a missed session may preserve the explanation while losing the opportunity to practise and receive feedback.

  • Who answers questions, through which channel, and within what stated timeframe?
  • Are tasks checked by a person, an automated system or an answer key?
  • Does the course include the material and skills you need for Academic or General Training?
  • Can you see a sample lesson and a sample of the feedback?

Do not infer a service from a label. “Teacher support” needs an explanation of what the teacher will review. For individual teacher selection, use the tutor trial checklist.

A worked calendar comparison

The following fictional example illustrates a decision, not typical class durations or a recommended study workload. Arun has two dependable evenings and part of Sunday available. He is comparing two arrangements.

Option A: a nearby classroom course

Two 60-minute evening classes each week, plus 30 minutes of travel each way for each class. That uses 240 minutes before independent study: 120 in class and 120 travelling. The timetable is stable, but one class ends close to his last available bus.

Option B: a live online group

Two 60-minute evening classes, with no travel. That uses 120 minutes before independent study. However, one session overlaps with noise at home, and he has not checked whether he can speak during the class.

Option B leaves more time on this calendar, but only if Arun can participate properly. His next step is to test his room and connection at the actual class time and ask about speaking turns. Option A may still fit if its travel is sustainable and its teaching better addresses his current work.

Do the calculation for your own week. Include preparation, homework, uploading work and reviewing comments. Avoid filling every available period with lessons and leaving no time to use the feedback.

How much individual feedback will you get?

A group can provide different viewpoints and practice partners. It also shares the teacher's attention. Class length alone does not tell you how much time will be spent on your answers.

Ask a concrete question: “In a normal week, which of my speaking or writing attempts will you review, and how will I receive the comments?” A clear answer is more informative than an advertised maximum class size by itself.

Compare two descriptions of support

Vague: “Personal feedback included.”

Specific: “You submit one short recording before Thursday. The teacher identifies one strength and one priority in written notes, and you can discuss the notes during the next class.”

The second description is easier to evaluate. It is an invented service example, not a PrepEx or supplier offer.

Private time can be useful for a persistent problem or a question that requires discussion. You still need independent attempts. A teacher cannot observe whether you can use a method on your own if every answer is completed together.

You might combine a group course with occasional targeted help, but avoid buying overlapping services without a reason. First check what the group teacher can already address.

Test the conditions before committing

For online learning, try the microphone, headphones if you use them, document sharing and a recording playback. Check that the teacher can hear the words clearly rather than judging a connection fault as a speaking problem. Confirm whose responsibility it is to reschedule if a technical failure interrupts a lesson.

For a classroom, make the journey at a realistic time if possible. Ask to see the learning environment, check accessibility needs and confirm the attendance policy. A course you repeatedly miss may be a poor fit even when its teaching is good.

In either format, ask how learners are placed in groups and what happens if the level is unsuitable. There should be enough challenge to learn and enough explanation to participate. A prestigious course name does not resolve a mismatch.

Make a decision you can review

Write three short lines before booking: the problem you need help with, the evidence that this course addresses it and the conditions that must work for you to attend. Keep unresolved questions beside them.

After the first few sessions, compare the experience with that record. Can you identify a change in your own work? Are you completing the independent tasks? Is promised review arriving in time to use it? Discuss a mismatch early, while you can still act within the booking terms.

Use the first lesson brief to make the learning goal specific. You can arrange extra peer practice using the study group session guide, without assuming that peer comments replace professional assessment.

Common questions about IELTS class formats

Are online IELTS classes as useful as classroom classes?

They can provide live teaching and feedback, but the actual course design and your participation matter. Inspect the offer and try the conditions rather than assuming the delivery channel establishes quality.

Does studying online mean I must take IELTS Online?

No. A preparation class is separate from your exam booking. Confirm the accepted test and available delivery with the receiving organisation and your test provider.

Can a free course replace a private tutor?

It depends on the help you need. Explanations and practice materials may resolve some questions. An unresolved problem in your own work may need discussion. Use evidence from your attempts to decide.

Compare one real offer

Fill in the format, attendance commitment and feedback details for a course you are considering. If one term is unclear, ask the provider to explain it before paying. In IELTS Community discussions, you can ask a focused study-format question without posting private booking information.
